Error 2131

I have a brand new Dell Lap top and when I try to burn cds it gives me the unknown (2131) error. I have used my burner with other programs so I know that is not it and I have also tried re-installing itunes but that did not work as well. Any one else have this problem? Any suggestions?

That's actually the first time I've seen it on a Dell (although i haven't been doing much working on Importing & Burning issues for a few weeks now). I'd mostly seen it reported on one particular variety of drive on Toshiba models.

Can you post your DVD/CD diagnostics for us please?

Put a music CD in each of your drives. Then, in iTunes, go "Help > run diagnostics ...", select "DVD/CD diagnostics, and paste the complete results into a reply.

Thanks BeckyJ2008, but the link to the download would have been useful in your post. I have added the link here to the Toshiba UK site where you can download the Firmware. Just download and run the executable. Haven't tried it yet, but will keep you posted! Dom F

OK so an update on my last post...

You need to be aware of the current firmware of your device. If you go to the Device Manager and open up the properties for the TSSTcorp CDDVDW L632H and then click on the Details Tab. In the big box at the bottom of the window should be a single item with a long underscore followed by either TO02 or TMC0.

This relates to the two major firmware revisions that Tosh have released. It seems that the patch for the TO02 is available online, however the patch for the TMC0 is not easily accessable.

I am just on the phone at the moment to the manufacturer of my laptop, Novatech, who are aware of the problem and extreemly helpful. Even the guy on the phone has the same laptop as me and has experienced the same problem!!

We're gonna see if we can find the alternative patch and I will post the link here as well.

Update you guys soon...

Dom

Right here it is... Result!!

The guys from Novatech, who built the laptop got in contact with Samsung who worked on this drive as well as Toshiba. If you have the TO02 firmware then you can easily get the download of the updated firmware from the link that I posted previously.

However, if your firmware is TMC0 then you have the Samsung firmware, which they have not yet published. However, Novatech managed to get their hands on this patch from the nice people over at Samsung who then sent it to me. I ran the patch for the TMC0 firmware and hey-presto it fixed the 2131 error.

Novatech have said that Samsung have not fully tested this patch yet and will be releasing it soon into the public domain, so you now need to focus your attention on Samsung's web site. If I see the link in the future I will post it here.

You MUST also note that this firmware must only be used in conjunction with this particular drive and NO OTHER. If you do use it with another drive it will render it completely useless... You have been warned!

So come on Samsugn hurry up and get this patch out for everyone else to use!!

Hope these posts have been helpful.

Its taken us a lot of digging and chasing to get a result.

Maybe Apple could expand their error code 2131 to relate specifically to this problem and advise of the solution.

Regards,
Dom

Do Dell manufacturer the CD DVD drives? - No
What is the model number of the drive in question? - TSSTcorp CDDVDW TS-L632H
Who does this signify? - Toshiba Samsung
Who has taken responsibility for this error and released a patch? - Toshiba Samsung
Who purchased this premanufactured drive for use in their laptops units? - Dell amounst others

So now tell me where you think the problem lies? Dell or Toshiba Samsung?

In the last few weeks I think I have provided enough useful information to resolve this issue. Your last comment provides no evidence that Dell have any responsibility in this matter, shown evidently by their lack of co-operation to help you resolve it.

Toshiba and Samsung, however, have done all they can in recent weeks to develop the required patch based on the wealth of information that WE have provided them.

Wise up clever clogs!

Like anything else with iTunes and Windows its one big headache!! All I want to do is take some of the music out of my iTunes and put it on a disk. I have a Toshiba with Vista if anyone knows how to make it work I would greatly appreciate it.

Someone needs to idiot proof this stuff!!! I'm tired of paying perfectly good money for things that are nothing put a pain in the neck!!! to put it nicely!

I have this CD Drive as well. It did not give me an error message. But after importing the first 13 songs or so, it slows down from 10-20x, down to .1-3.x. I tried this in windows Media player as well, and experienced the same problem. I do not this this is on apple, it is on the cd drive make and Dell. I just talked to help support for several hours, and they took control of my computer and watched it happened. They had me install the updated driver, restore my computer to factory default-erasing all of my files, and we tried it in safe mode. None of those things helped. They are sending me a new drive now, and he promised it would be a different model number. I recommend to everyone that they ask for a new drive, with a different model number, if you are still under warrenty. I am hoping the new drive fixes the problem, if it does not, i will come back on here. Good luck
