your Wi-Fi reverts to Edge? READ THIS

For 98% of you this is an incorrect setting on your IPHONE.

There are multiple choices for the encryption method (for secured wireless networks) on the IPhone. The IPHONE default is "WEP-Passphrase" (example "yourdogsname").

If you are setting up the network and it appears to connect but you get an IP address that is like "16x.x.x.x" instead of the usual 192.x.x.x the IPhone is not properly logging onto your network.

Instead of simply entering your Wi-Fi key into the "security" field on the wi-fi setting screen. CLICK ON THE SECURITY FIELD and you will then be given a list of choices that includes things such as "WEP-HEX OR ASCII KEY"

If your wireless key is something like "A5D123456" then you have a HEX KEY not a PASSPHRASE. Conversely if you have "dogsname" as a wireless key then it is a passphrase not a Hex Key. Ensuring that this setting is correct will solve most peoples connection problems.

I am an IT professional and it took me an hour to figure out this rediculously simple fix.

THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH!!
I've been dealing with this issue since I bought the iPhone.
Tech support could not help me either.
I think it would help others to mention that you must select the network, click the arrow next to it and then choose "Forget this Network" first (if you have what looks like a good connection to WiFi).
Then look for the network again, choose it and then go through the password/security steps that you brilliantly figured out.

Thanks again

The advice here has been consistent with my experience. 2 other things to note/check:

1. If there is a question about whether or not you are actually connected to a wifi network, go back to settings, Wifi and then tap the blue arrow on the network name that it appears you are connected to. You should see at a minimum an ip address and in some cases, subnet mask, router ip and dns. Not sure under which conditions you see the all listings - could be all the time maybe someone else can verify - but in all cases no ip address, no internet connection.

2. If you are on a wifi network that requires a login, such as paid for hotspot at airport, coffee shop etc, you may see everything that I mentioned in #1 but you still need to start up safari and login to the wifi network to either enter you credentials or pay - whatever the set-up. I find this particularly confusing as everything looks OK, you get the wifi icon on phone, you get ip details in settings but nothing works, especially since I tend to check mail first and not go to safari.

It seems clear that the whole area of wifi on the phone is one that needs a lot of work but these are all fixable problems, mostly around giving better user feedback and simplifying things like key type. My IBM laptop has great software for this and wifi logon is a breeze no matter where I am. I'm hoping this is an area apple with put some effort into for updates.

I first started researching this problem when I noticed my iPhone would not connect through the wireless router at home, and would give me a Safari error about not opening a page.

I think I have tried many of these suggestions, including:
1. resetting my router password
2. power cycling router
3. changing security format to ASCII/HEX (note this setting keeps switching back to WEP)
4. inserting $ in password field
5. airplane mode off/on
6. power down iPhone
7. selecting "forget network" and then re-joining

After I enter the password and press join, it appears I am connecting, but once in Safari, the E for Edge is still present.

In the Wi-Fi Networks screen, the network I have entered the password for loses the pw lock and then it shows up again. Sometimes the pw lock goes away, but if I enter Safari, still on E for Edge.

Sometimes, if I go to settings, I notice the IP addr is "16x.x.x.x" format, but it is not always there.

I do not know if it matters, but I have a 2Wire router from SBC DSL.

Why is my MacBook so easy to connect to the same wireless router, but my iPhone will not?

I love my iPhone, please tell me I am not going crazy and there is a solution I have not tried. I have spent 3 hours on this today.

THANKS!

MacBook Mac OS X (10.4.10) iPhone 8GB
