cinema display recognized, but black with non-working power button

i just bought a mac pro and used my 20 and 23 inch cinema displays with it. the first day i rebooted several times (because of installing various programs and doing a software update) and both screens worked fine.

however, today i start up my mac pro and the 23" (my main display with the dock, menubar, etc) was completely black with no power light. but i was baffled because it still had my menubar and dock, and acted as if it was still working. what is going on!?! any help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks,
morgan

Just goes to show you that apple products are not as great as they'd like everyone to believe, and their support is even worse.

I've called a dozen stores that sell apple products and not one of them carries a replacement power supply, which is undoubtedly what is wrong.

I can't believe I have to special order a power supply for $150 just over a year after purchasing this $1300 hunk of junk.

I'll never buy apple again.

Yeah I just started having this problem about a week ago, not long after that new update, which can't be a coincidence, especially with so many others having this problem. The only thing that has worked for me is unplugging and plugging the power cord for the display back in several times, and I've found the faster you do it, the more likely the screen will turn on. Has anyone contacted Apple about this?

i am having similar problems. i put my quad intel to sleep for lunch, when i came back my audio interface had lost its connection (a problem in its self) so i shut down to restart. when i turned it back on the screen was black but the little light was on. it is not responding as of now. this is the second time this has happened, i spoke with an apple rep but he could not figure it out. a while later i turned it on and it worked fine. it feels very random. not fun when work needs to get done you know...
thanks!
Luke.

Hi all,

Nice to see this is a wide spread issue. I'm also having trouble with a year old 30" display on a Mac Pro 8Core.

However, i just discovered this weird tidbit by accident trying to wake my monitor up.:

Whenever i plug in the USB connector on the Display, the screen "turns off" and goes black. If i unplug the USB, it comes back on.

W T F?

I just got this thing back from apple, they replaced the LCD panel. This was after i tired re-imaging the tower from scratch with no luck.

When i was testing the monitor it worked fine. Until I placed it back on the tower it belongs too. I usually plug the keyboard /mouse into the USB on the monitor, Which i didn't do of course while testing it on another tower.

Now i got the keyboard/mouse hooked up via USB extension directly to the tower. Brightness controls are disabled but at least it works.

I'm starting to wonder if this is an display firmware problem???

we have an older 30" that is working perfectly fine on an exactly identical tower with the exact same OS/software image installed.

Well to reply to my own post, I just got off the phone with Apple support. The tech support person basically slammed the door in my face as far as trying to figure this all out.

I did leave out the fact that we at one point got a "backlight error" blink code from our monitor. While the monitor later kept working again ( when it wanted to) that's the reason the monitor was repaired. So the display was repaired based on the backlight error.

Now as i get back in touch with apple on this new information that i've discovered, which seems obviously related IMO, the rep i just talked to won't do didly squat for me because "this is a completely new issue" and we would need to pay for a new repair.

Now, even if there is a "new issue" as they say, why can't they guarantee their repair work? This monitor should have been fixed. Obviously it has not because now I have a "new issue" as it was returned from apple. not even one day back in action...... Where has customer service gone to these days....... Angry with frustration here......

This post may be a bit of venting, but maybe the tidbit of info I added might spring an idea to someone out there that none of us have thought of yet.

I have the same problem. I have a G5 2.5GHz running 10.4.10. I am using a 23" and a 20". My main monitor is the 23" It is about 3 years old, but never had any problems. Today I went outside for a minute and when I came back my 23" was black. The computer sees it because I can mouse over there, but obviously can't see where my mouse is. There is no power light. I plugged the power supply fr my 20" in and I do get the power ight, but the screen is still black. The power light does a series of flashes. 2 quick flashes, short pause and 1 flash and then a long pause and then it repeats over and over. Some sort of error code maybe? Since the power light doesn't come on with the 23' power supply, I suppose something is wrong with it too. I plugged the 23" into my 12" PowerBook and got the same result. The computer sees it, but the screen is black. I am going to take it to the Apple store in a little while along with this post just to show others are having the same problem. I'll post the results when I get back.

Back from the Apple store. They plugged it into another power supply and it fired right up. They do not sell the power supply in the store. You have to order through the genius bar or I think you can call Apple Care and order through them. They consider it a service part. They want you to send the old power supply back to them. My new one is supposed to be in on Monday. I'll know for sure then if this fixes the problem. The cost of a new power supply for the 23" is $66 and has a 90 day waranty. Hopes this helps. Good luck.

Same issue with my 23" Cinema Display and MBP... No problems for over a year and a half before this..

Tech had me trying to reset PRAM, my machine wouldn't respond to this at all so I brought it in for service and am using a rental at the moment... Same problems continue on the rental!

One bug I didn't read hear that I occasionally get:
Monitor sleeps and immediately wakes with "device removal error" Apparently the usb hub in the back of the monitor was causing this, so I bypassed them.

Otherwise same issue as everyone else: MPB acts like a monitor is plugged in but the screen is dark with non-functional power button (blinks when pushed). This seems to only happen when restarting. Unpluging the brick seems to fix it. Also, I am able to power down/up the monitor once it is running normally by using the screens button.

Don't any apple tech people read these????

this is not - i repeat not a hardware problem - it s the last upgrade problem -the quicktime and itunes

This can't be can it? It's happening to my wifes XP PC and other peoples PCs also. PCs doesn't tie into the monitor's power up shut down functions how a mac does.

Second my work computer doesn't have iTunes installed nor has Quicktime been updated. I've attached my 23" to one PC, my MBP and two different G5s (the ones with no iTunes) and the only commonality is the display not working.

i fixed my cinema display problem (and several other bugs) by manually downloading and reinstalling the latest itunes and quicktime update. when software update installed those upates, that is when my cinema display problem started (and it destroyed itunes but i did not notice for several days) and didn't go away until i manually downloaded the updates. try it out, but i do not know if everyone on this forum had used software update before this started happening.

First day out of the box, half an hour after a relatively easy set up and I had a black screen incident on my 30 inch display. The display was black, the power light not lit yet the display was recognized and the mouse disappeared into the black hole.

Having an attack of increasing hypertension I found this forum. I followed the comments about rapidly plugging and unplugging the power lead. On the third attempt the screen came back to life, the power light remains unlit.

Interesting. Thank goodness for the Sale of Goods Act because I reckon this comes under the "not of merchantable quality" phrase which gives us UK consumers protection against shoddy workmanship, which this undoubtedly is. I will contact Apple tomorrow and ask their opinion.

Chiming back in!

Just to let you all know. Doing absolutely nothing seems to have helped me. Or rather, the issue appears to have resolved itself. Everyone, myself included, believs this all to be a software issue where an update had caused this then later resolved this. Not sure which update, although many seem to be blaming a itunes version...

Will let you all know if I encounter any other issues.

I have a 11 month old quad intel power mac and 23 inch cinema display with exactly the problems you all are describing. This started happening a few weeks ago. Unpluging and repluging the power - either at the brick or at the outlet - has always done the trick before. But it has been a few hours now, and it is totally unresponsive. I use the system daily in XP under bootcamp and nightly in OS X. Both have this problem. I have had this system for just under a year. So I hope I can get this fixed. What I am hearing here is not encouraging...

my last Hitatchi enormous 21 inch crt lasted me almost 10 years. And I shipped it over seas and back and to 4 apartments. I really hope there is a solution to this.

Following up previous post..

I left my machine on for hours last night. The monitor did not come back on by itself - nor respond to the power button. I shut things down for the night, and the next morning everything worked "fine" again.

My latest theory is that it is a problem with the power saving logic or circuitry of the display. This problem will reset itself only when it's not receiving a display signal from a video card. The problem occurs only when the software of the operating system "puts" the display in power save mode. On both OSX and XP this results in a monitor that becomes unresponsive.

Based on that theory here's my fix. I disable the power save feature in the os. Just turn the monitor power down timeout to never. Make sure that you have a screen saver to prevent burn in. And then power down the monitor manually on the side when needed.

I've been testing this today and so far so good. When I went to lunch I powered down the monitor with the switch on the side. Turned it on quickly just to make sure my day wasn't shot again, and turned it off. Went to lunch, the **** thing turned itself back on. Left my machine on btw - also in never sleep mode. Turned it off again, went to have some coffee and watch some news. Came back and it was on again. I think the monitor is just really confused. But at least it comes on now. Now I only have to worry about the power bill...

I'll keep you all updated if my theory doesn't hold water. Or I'm sure you all will let me know:)
