cinema display recognized, but black with non-working power button

i just bought a mac pro and used my 20 and 23 inch cinema displays with it. the first day i rebooted several times (because of installing various programs and doing a software update) and both screens worked fine.

however, today i start up my mac pro and the 23" (my main display with the dock, menubar, etc) was completely black with no power light. but i was baffled because it still had my menubar and dock, and acted as if it was still working. what is going on!?! any help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks,
morgan

I ordered a new brick after having this issue for years . (It was "repaired" three times). The monitor works when it wants, turns off and on randomly. I go weeks sometimes without an issue, and of course it worked for a couple months when returned from being "fixed," so it has been difficult to chuck it and get a new one.

Unfortunately the new power brick did not solve my problem. Display continues to be my bane.

It poorly seems that my 23" apple cinema display adc is suffering from some similar symptoms shown above since few weeks. The Mac mini even stopped to sing is trumpet sound when starting up.

The first time I used the screen, everything was nice, clean & bright with normal behaviour sleep mode. Wow! but not for a long time... From about day 3, following an update (itunes and security pack and quick time, i think, can't remember) it could not wakes from a sleep state, screen staying black and the power light lighting in a repetitive motion (short-short---long---;etc.). Emergency solution then was to unplug/plug again the power cable of the dvi-to-adc adapter to wake the screen back. The repetitive and intermitent syndroma continued untill that day, 2 exact weeks after I bought the apple display from a particular, there it showed no signs of life. The Mac Mini starts (but no trumpet sound), drive sound as normal but no power in the screen, the abnormally cold adc/dvi brick is making a high pitched quiet noise with some clicks in a uncoordinate motion.

I tried all possible tests, plugging the display to a powermac g4 with adc/vga video card = still no power to the screen/ then check the mini with other DVI screen = video card of the mac is working great. I'd just returned the adc/dvi adapter to the retailer for an exange, waiting to see if a new adapter could be a possible solution. But the test with the powermac tells by itself, the bug is in the screen (but where in that d%?$ screen?).

Some of you talked about a upgrade or firmware case; considering the long period of time those toubles occurs to so many users joined to the important number of similar cases in this topic column, I can't figure out how apple can endure that recurent problem unresolved with only vague firmware issues or explanations in counterparts. any other similar cases, or issues?

hi, it's still me with my 23" ADC apple cinema display problem. I did just forgot to tell about my last test to explain the power faillure trouble I'm dealing with for about a week. I get this display connected last night all long to an adc port of a nVIDIA GeFOrce 4 mx of a Quicksilver tower and it worked again after a while (all the buttons pref and power shows both good response, the powermac detects prettywell the adc monitor, everything get back to normal and even better (no more random display stanby trouble, power light flashing and etc.) I'm even thinking to buy that Quicksilver tower my local pawn shop borrowed me too make my test)

I did just let the computer run (with no program running) after having plugged my composite benQ screen on VGA port and the ADC monitor to the ADC plug. At first, unsurprisingly, the Apple HD display wouldn't light up (still no power) but this morning when I did wake up, I wasn't dreaming, the power signal of the clear case monitor was lighted up back ! Can't believe this, it get finally working back again during the night for no apparent reason! And for so I had to disconnect the Benq screen and restart the computer properly. The BenQ now detects no signal(powermac don't see the BenQ screen *an the ADC screen is working well*. SO IT IS NOT A HARDWARE TROUBLE OF THE APPLE ADC HD CINEMA DISPLAY that may causes the power light to shutdown and lightup alternatively in some strange sleep mode (after sometimes really short periods of time while the monitor preferences we're set to never let the display fell in standby mode) . The hardware test I did proves it by itself. To anyone is experimenting similar problems with a ADC apple monitor(showed in my last communiqué) , let me say if this article helped you or at least reconfort a bit about your case.

In the meantime, I impatient to hear the type of answers that the technician at my apple certified store will come up with when I'll get back my adc/dvi converter from exange next week. UNTILL THAT TWO THESIS LEFT AT THIS MOMENT TO EXPLAIN THIS UNPLEASANT AND INCOMPREHENSIBLE EXPERIENCE :AN ADC/DVI ADAPTER/COVERTER TROUBLE (INPUTABLE TO HARDWARE ISSUE)- OR - A CONFLICT CREATED BY SOME UPLOAD FROM THE LAST OSX 10.4.11 UPGRADES. THAT'S ALL I SEE...

Michael,

I seem to be having the same exact problem as you. I use my older clear cinema 23' as my main monitor and my 17' as my secondary. Anyways i had the backlight inverter switched and just like yours it got rid of the blink but ends up coming on for a split second at boot and then goes black. and when i mess with the mirror setting or screen res it just glitches on for a split second and then back to black. Everything on the monitor seems to work fine just no video.

I tried what you said about messing with the screen res and mirroring but to no avail. Have you found anything that fixes this since your last post?

thanks

Zach

I recently bought six 23" displays two for each of the Intel towers I bought at the same time. Of the three computers two of them blink three long blinks and a pause, on one of their monitors, the third one does not. Each of them are setup the same way, in the settings.

BUT the two with the blinking issues were macs that were transfered to the new OS from old G5 towers. The one that does not blink was a new install with no transfer.

I also just noticed that on the macs that are blinking, there is no options tab in the display preferences on the screen that is blinking. On the mac with no issues there is an option tab on both screen's display preferences tab. It MUST be an issue from transferring the old mac's data to the new operating system.

I got my ACD Fedex to me on my birthday.

Today I plug to my new MacBook Pro 2,2 and it went black.
I replug to my MacBook 2.0 (all same settings) and the screen is on Instantly.

So it's not a Brick problem. I'm definite about this. If it's brick problem (which is definitely use on both MB and MBP) how come it's turned on by one but not by another?

However I'm taking mine to Apple shop ASAP (tomorrow morning) as my birthday in 3 days which mean Apple Care died in 3 days.

If anyone have another Idea it's a great time to post.

Sincerely yours,

cinema display recognized, but black with non-working power button
