cinema display recognized, but black with non-working power button

i just bought a mac pro and used my 20 and 23 inch cinema displays with it. the first day i rebooted several times (because of installing various programs and doing a software update) and both screens worked fine.

however, today i start up my mac pro and the 23" (my main display with the dock, menubar, etc) was completely black with no power light. but i was baffled because it still had my menubar and dock, and acted as if it was still working. what is going on!?! any help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks,
morgan

Same here - 23 inch cinema display in a sudden started to show the "stays black although recognized" sickness. The rapid power off/on procedure helps to bring it back to life. Sometimes it is a matter of just a few off/on cycles but other times it takes plenty of these. However, after revival the display stays on for as long as I want it to.

After the several reports that a new power brick solves that annoying issue, I would like to know if there is anyone who didn't succeed with replacing the power brick?

Greetings,
jcr

After reading the multitude of threads with chronic 23" ACD problems, I have to wonder, is Apple focusing mainly on the NEW displays that may be coming??? I looked at the rave reviews for this model on CNET posted in '05 and '06, and then all of a sudden, like falling off a cliff, a lot of angry reviews started appearing after that.

I have had no problems with my 30" ACD and was hoping the 23" would be good for my office. Looks like it's wait and see. Seems like a crap shoot to me. Too bad. Great display, if you get one without problems.

I have a G4 with a 23 inch cinema screen. After several years of trouble free use the screen flashed and went black, and then the on button on the screen started to flash three times and then pause. After a short while fan in the tower (or the hard drive) made a very loud whirring sound. I turned the computer off and on several times but still had a black screen and a flashing power button. Finally I turned off the computer, unplugged the ACD from the tower, restarted the computer and then replugged in the ACD. I got a corrupted screen which eventually corrected itself. Hope this is of some help to someone else in this situation. Does anybody recognize this set of events? Should I be replacing something?

I'm having the same problem with the "off" screen that still seems to be recognized in a dual display config... I tried most of the relevant fixes noted here, short of the "new brick" approach.
None worked.

Then I unplugged the Firewire and USB cables from the display and plugged the DVI input back into my MBPro and Voila, it's back.

Might just be dumb luck. It might go out again in 5 minutes or 5 days, but it's working now.

So if you're having this problem, clearing the ports might help.
Now if I could just work up the courage to plug them back in.

I had the same problem. Wanted to explode in anger with my display not working, it's such a nice Display but your world goes down when it does.

Called Apple, got a new brick for $80 and IT WORKED! Reboots with Mac Pro on Leopard as expected.

Now I just have to call Apple back to get the double charge refunded they did. Hope the new brick doesn't die!

My Apple Cinema Display would briefly turn on, and then go black with no powerlight showing, when the system woke up or restarted. I knew the system had turned on properly because it would make the "new mail" sounds. My 'work around' was to unplug the monitor for a minute or two and then the display would come back on immediately.

From reading the posts in this thread I decided to try a new power brick. I was still under Apple Care, so they sent one out under warranty. It is not the same model as the original - perhaps the original ones were faulty? With the new powerbrick, the display has performed flawlessly. My old powerbrick has - in very small writing - "Celtron APP 22-611-0344". This was the old faulty one. FYI.

Hope this helps someone with the same problem

For what it's worth, I just spoke with an Apple rep about my problem (which was/is essentially the same as what everyone here is describing), and he said that it is a known issue and that it is software-based -- that is, it is actually something that should be fixed in a future update of Mac OS X. I'm currently running 1.5.2.

Although he was cryptic as usual about when that update would happen, it at least sounded hopeful. Not sure if that puts anyone's mind at ease or helps at all, but I thought I would at least report.
