iPhone and Water

i have had cell phones for more then 10 years now. some of them good and some of them better with water issues.
Nokia has (use to have) a model that was waterproof and floated.
how tolerant is the iPhone to water? i live in south Florida and sometimes just standing outside you get so wet (either sweat or rain) so talking on the phone can be a wet experience for the poor phone.
anybody had a "wet" experience wth the iphone?
thanks

After a day of drying out, my SIM card was fine. At first it worked sporadically, but now all seems fine. It is important to immediately take the SIM card out and dry it. Use a hair dryer, but not set to high. Then just let it continue drying out, but not in the phone.

Of coarse if your iPhone has lingured in water, not sure if this will work. Also, the salt in the ocean acts as a corrosive, so again not sure if the above will work.

I've had cell phones for more than 20 years!! My first was the size of a small suit case mounted in my truk!!

Anyway, since "pocket" phones came out, I would rarely get more than 1 year out of them before they quit. The problem is always moisture. Not from rain or carelessness, but from sweat. A phone in my pocket is a phone that will fail from moisture.

For now, I carry my iphone mostly and don't put in in m pocket unless i'm hanging out in the air conditioned office and not busting bum outside in the heat.

my first one was ruined when i rode through thunderstorm on motorcyle -- iphone was in the jacket. it initially displayed horrible failure systems (bizarre screen patterns, etc.), then revived as it dried out over 24 hours, with only a few remaining minor glitches, but over the next week it went terminal and ultimately wouldn't power down or respond to commands. I now carry a waterproof bag on the bike. $600 of stupidity, although I may still try to throw more money at it and get it repaired.

I was boating on 8/31 and accidentally entered the water with my iPhone in my pocket. I was in the water between 5 and 10 minutes. The phone was dead for approximately 48 hours. On 9/2 the phone began to show signs of life. Functionality was progressively restored over the next 24 hours. At the time of this email, the phone is functioning perfectly except for streaks underneath the screen. I removed the SIM card and let the phone dry in an air conditioned room for two days. I was very lucky and believe my case is probably rare for a phone that was submerged for up to 10 minutes.

I wanted to see if anyone had any ideas for ad hoc protection from the rain. I'm a cyclist, and typically carry my iPhone on the bike. I like to use it for moblogging, but mostly carry it for safety (nice to be able to call for help when there is a problem). Typically, the phone goes in a one gallon ziplock bag, along with a bandana (extra protection for the phone, plus a million and one uses in its own right), and occasionally a map. That is carried in a cycling jersey pocket (three pockets along the lower back of the shirt (i.e. up top)). This does a good job of protecting it from sweat, and I imagine the odd drizzle.

However, the ride I've been looking foward to all year is this weekend, and there is a 50% chance of showers and thunderstorms. It's not going to be submurged, but it may be exposed to an hour or two of riding in the rain. I want to protect it as best I can. I was thinking of double-bagging (putting the phone in a sandwich sized ziplock, and that into the above configuration (perhaps getting a fresh gallon ziplock)).

I don't intend to take it out in the rain unless there is an actual probelm.

Does anyone have any thoughts as to whether that would be adeqaute?

thanks,
Charles

In sweaty environments (e.g. Manhattan in the summer), I put my iphone in a small zipper polyurethane bag, in particular the "CVS Zipper Seal Snack Bag" #966499. Same as ziplocks but cheaper ($2.69 for box of 50 bags). The "snack bag" is smaller than the "sandwich bag" and measures 6.5 x 3.25 inches.

The touch screen works perfectly through the thin poly and the phone sound carries through pretty well too. I was stuck outdoors in the tornado/downpour that hit Brooklyn/Manhattan this summer and used the phone to call several cab companies with zero moisture seepage.

For days at the beach (where sand would rip up the poly bag), I recommend Aquapac's Mini Phone/GPS case:
