iPod shuffle will not sync with iTunes 7.3; "iPod sync failed"

My shuffle is acting weird lately. For example, when I plug in the iPod and try to add songs and/or sync the device, iTunes says, "iPod sync failed. Disconnect and reconnect, then try again." It's really annoying because I can't add any songs to it or change any settings. Please help me! I have tried almost everything to save my shuffle and have restored it about 6 times! 😟

Have you tried a Disk Repair in the Disk Utility?

Also, you could have a damaged iPodDriver.kext file. You can replace it by doing an archive and install or use a 3rd party extractor and get it from your Install disk. Or copy it from a friends Mac.

You mean the iPod Reset Utility? I'll try doing that,
but I have tried it before and it is really slow for
some reason (maybe it's just my iPod). Thanks!

OK. That didn't work. It erased and restored the iPod fine and iTunes didn't pop up any messages but when I tried to drag a song to the iPod shuffle in the Devices list, it showed a "Waiting for iPod" screen and told me that the iPod sync failed and that I needed to disconnect and reconnect the shuffle.

I tried to search for that iPodDriver.kext file on my computer but it didn't find anything, even when I searched for "kext". Should I take it into the Apple Store for a repair or is there something else I could do?

It should be in:

System > Library > Extensions > iPodDriver.kext

Should be 188k. Mine has a date of 3/26/05

If it is there, and looks alright, I'd take your iPod
in for service.

Yeah, it's 188 KB from March 26, 2005. Are you sure I should take my iPod in for a checkup? My nearest Apple Store is pretty far away. Is there possibly anything else I could try?

OK. This is extremely odd. I can't transfer music from the iTunes Store to my iPod, but I can transfer unprotected songs with no problem. Also, if I add an unprotected song to my shuffle and then a protected song, it works! I have to do it in that exact order, though. Some unprotected songs from CDs, etc... don't work. I think it has to do with the number of kbps (128). Is my shuffle OK now or should I still take it in for a repair?

Did you ever sort this out? I'm having the same issue by my iPod Shuffle, 2nd generation, and my 15" MBP. I actually had my iPod shuffle replaced at the Apple Store b/c of this issue, only to get home and have the same thing pop up with the replacement.

The weird part of this is that with both shuffles that I've had now, they worked for a little while, and then stopped syncing. I have iTunes 7.3 installed. The only other weird part is that my iTunes library lives on a different machine that I access through my home network.

Any suggestions? Thanks!
