AT&T Activation server down

So, I'd been having problems with my phone where the iPod would stop playing while I was using the WiFi and restarting it hadn't helped, so I thought I should try a full Restore.
I've been syncing, so no worries about losing information. The software downloaded into iTunes and everything went OK until it got to the re-activation part.

"iPhone activations are not available at this time due to scheduled AT&T system maintenance... please connect again after 3pm EST Sunday"

Well, that's just great isn't it. Now I've got a $600 paperweight all day.

HOW ABOUT TELLING US OF *SCHEDULED* MAINTENANCE *BEFORE* THE RESTORE PROCESS STARTS..?

It wouldn't be hard to check that the AT&T activation server was alive before the process started and to give us an option box that said when we would be able to complete the process before we started.

I've been reading the email string in this discussion and after hearing that it may be ANOTHER 24 hours until I can activate my phone I don't think AT&T has much of a leg to stand on here. They should have anticipated the increase in activations since Apple has been touting the "revolutionary" iPhone for a long time. I guess I am spending my day trying to get this phone activated since that is their best advice ("keep trying")???

If I were Steve Jobs I would say this "collaboration" is off to a pretty bad start.

I spoke to someone at AT&T. The rep told me that every weekend, from Friday night until Sunday night, AT&T generally would take the part of the system down for maintenance. She said the company did not do it the past two weekends due to the Apple launch. She also mentioned that she has spoken to several AT&T stores and they do have access to the activation process. Not understanding how that works. If it is a routine process for AT&T to take the system down for maintenance every Friday until Sunday, then we all need to know to make sure we do not do any resets via i-tunes during that time period. Rep also said system, based on her past experience, should be back up within the next two hours. Hopefully AT&T and Apple would clarify for us on Monday am.

Nope - if I was in this situation, I wouldn't be overjoyed and probably somewhat frustrated which is understandable but I'd find something else to do with my time in the interim. It is a friggin cell phone, iPod and internet device for goodness sake and my world is not going to come to an end and I'm certainly not going to let something like this rule and ruin my day. Complaining and whining will not do any good. You can bet that AT&T Wireless is motivated to get working again ASAP since they are missing out on revenue.

In defense of AT&T Wireless and Apple since Apple is involved with the activation process, over 1 million iPhones have been activated since 6/29 and several hundred thousand in the first day or two which is probably a first in the industry.

The iPhone is in it's infancy and so is this new type of activation process which is breaking new ground so there are bound to be some growing pains.
