AT&T Activation server down

So, I'd been having problems with my phone where the iPod would stop playing while I was using the WiFi and restarting it hadn't helped, so I thought I should try a full Restore.
I've been syncing, so no worries about losing information. The software downloaded into iTunes and everything went OK until it got to the re-activation part.

"iPhone activations are not available at this time due to scheduled AT&T system maintenance... please connect again after 3pm EST Sunday"

Well, that's just great isn't it. Now I've got a $600 paperweight all day.

HOW ABOUT TELLING US OF *SCHEDULED* MAINTENANCE *BEFORE* THE RESTORE PROCESS STARTS..?

It wouldn't be hard to check that the AT&T activation server was alive before the process started and to give us an option box that said when we would be able to complete the process before we started.

As of 4:30 PDT, I am in "Processing Activation" purgatory as well. (Have been for about 30 minutes now.) Interestingly, the deactivation of my old SIM card is already complete. So, that leads me to conclude that the AT&T hand that takes moves faster than the AT&T hand that gives.

Just got activated about an hour ago. though i tried for about 4 hours continuously. once i got in though it was very quick...

I posted too soon...I just got an email telling me the activation is complete, and so I'm off to do that and play with the toy. Good luck to other new iPhone owners similarly stymied.

do something about AT&T's service, my first
impression of the iPhone is incredibly negative after
this. And why not let me at least sync my iPhone so I
can use it while AT&T figures out how to run a

If you just bought the iPhone in the past couple days our local stores were making buyers aware that the activation servers were to be down this weekend and that they should activate immediately or that they would have to wait until Late Sunday afternoon to activate. So if you were not informed, the fault lies with the store where the phone was purchased they had been notified since 7/11/07 corporate notification e-mail. Sorry for the inconvenience, but the witching hour is over so you should be enjoying your iPhone by now

Hey wait, it took me NINE hours on June 29th to activate my phone and it's just like Childbirth labor once the pain is over you can enjoy your new bundle of Joy for month and years to come. I have enjoyed the new experience and do not think about that lost nine hours until I hear rants like this and feel I mast add my two cents. I would go through all that grief again if I had to just to have this phone/iPod/Web Browser/E-mail client/Game machine.
