Sudden, unwanted page breaks in long MS Word for Mac document

My husband was editing (cut and paste block moves) in a document of about 450 pages. Suddenly, the program began creating page breaks after every line starting at page 317. The page count grew slowly from there to more than 8,500 pages. As far as we know, this was a spontaneous occurrence rather than a result of something he did. It may or may not be relevant, the document had been converted from text to MS Word format.

Our questions are: why did this happen? How do we prevent it in the future? How do we remove the unwanted page breaks from this document? Note; they are not selectable, so cannot be removed manually.

MS Word for Mac version 11.3.5; OS X 10.4. 10

iMac, Mac OS X (10.4.10)

I to have been having the grey screen of death and funnily enough it started since i installed 10.4.10...i've had it about 5 times now, not vey impressed with a Mac thats only 1 month old but Apple does have a way of sorting these things out. P.s my laptop aint black.

I solved the problem myself. if anyone is inerested, the answer can be found in the Microsoft help at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/233493. I used the procedure under Check for unespexted page breaks ..., with the variation that I modified the normal style instead of heading 1 as directed. The 8,000 page document is now back to the proper 452.
