IMAP trash emptying on its own

I've searched for anyone else having this issue to no avail.

I have setup a folder called iPhone Trash on my Mail server. I assigned it on my iPhone as the trash can and set that IMAP account to NEVER delete messages. It properly drops the message in that box when I delete it and I can see it on my web-based mail client.

The issue is, every day or so, that box empties out. I haven't set any special rules on my server to delete messages from this box. I have the proper setting on the iPhone not to delete messages. Why is this trash emptying?

Has anyone else experienced something similar? Thanks for any help.

Regards,

Clay

This was one of the most annoying computer/email problems I have ever had. I spent weeks creating new user accounts, new IMAP accounts, and reinstalling leopard, mail, etc... And every day I looked in my trash only to see my mail disappearing....

Then I read this discussion thread. Although the workaround is not a clean solution...it works.

Also, 1.1.2 does nothing to fix this issue....unless I am missing something.

Thanks for the information from all of you.

After some experimentation using a dedicated [Gmail]/iPhoneTrash folder in GMail/IMAP, I've made some discoveries:
1) Iphone Mail will empty the trash almost immediately (i.e. within one day) if the Deleted Messages setting is set for "Remove: Never". This is obviously a bug.
2) Best workaround I could find is to use one of the other "Remove" settings. For example, I now use "Remove: After one month".
3) "After one month", means one month after the mail was sent, NOT one month after you trashed it. A little odd, but may be intentional.

The first issue (trash emptying when set to "Remove: never") is clearly an iPhone bug, NOT a server and/or Mail.app issue.

PS. I am still on iPhone firmware 1.1.1, but comments here seem to indicate the bug is still in 1.1.2.

Same issue here. iPhone upgraded to 1.1.2. Imap to .Mac, because I need another smtp server to get the right email address out. The iPhone mail settings set Remove to Never.

I did a test like this. An email of two weeks old was moved into the Trash on my MacBook. On my iPhone I could see the message appear -and disappear.

Then I set the iPhone mail settings to Remove After one month. Again moved an old email to the Trash on the iMac. It looks like it stays for now. Will keep you posted.

I am running the 1.1.2 firmware...

i tried setting my iphone to use its own trash folder (iPhone Trash) but am still seeing messages disappear from my regular trash folder. I did a simple test of sending myself messages that had 'test 1' 'test 2' etc and deleting them. they were sent on Dec 3rd and have vanished from my trash as of today.

I'm going to try changing the delete settings on the iphone to one month, but i would assume that that wouldn't change anything since i dont even have it set to the same folder (i.e. iphone has its own trash folder).

I'm also going to test another account (also IMAP, also accessed with Mail.app and iPhone) that is with another provider to see if it could be an interaction with the server (bluetie.com)

thanks,
-graham
