Leaving a Voice Mail Message to Yourself?

Can you leave a voice mail message to yourself using the iPhone? With previous cell phones, I have been able to do this by simply calling the phone itself and getting into voice mail. This has been a handy way to leave little messages to myself--sort of like jotting a post-it note.

That capability seems to be missing from the iPhone, but perhaps I am overlooking a way to do this?

No, when you called your own number the cell service would go directly to your voicemail so you could leave yourself a message because your phone was busy "making a call". To check your voicemail messages, at least on Cingular, you would just press and hold the #1 on the keypad...this function would dial the voicemail number which was different than your number.

On the iphone, when you call yourself it automatically logs you in to the voicemail service so that you can check your voicemails...I havent' found a way of leaving myself a voicemail using my iphone...anybody else found a way?

Kat,

Good ideas...however, what would suggest someone do if they are driving down the road and can't take their hands off the wheel to do this data entry?

I would normally do the data entry you suggest but these are new thoughts that occur to me while I am driving.

That's my problem...and in the past I resolved it by leaving myself a voicemail. It was the easiest and safest option in my opinion.

Any workarounds from anyone?

thanks

Thanks, everyone, for your suggestions so far. I had thought of the work and home voice mail options, and that is a workaround, although disturbing my sleeping wife during my 5:30 a.m. walk when some brilliant thought hits me might not be the best solution!

I have also used the "jot a note to yourself" option--won't work while driving, of course--but of course notes do not yet sync to the PC. (I am confident that will come eventually, and probably elegantly.) The calendar item with alarm was also a good idea--again, not suitable while driving, of course.

I have great faith in Apple, which is why I don't take all this "why won't my iPhone do this?" whining very seriously. I anticipate that it is only a matter of time some aspect of voice recording (and probably even speed dialing) works its way to the iPhone.
