Can't find firmware update in folder it's supposed to be in
I just purchased the iMac software install CD for Mac OS9.2 and tried to install it on my very old blueberry imac which is now running 8.6. I started the computer up from the CD and everything loads in correctly to start but when I try to install it, a message comes up saying that the firmware needs to be updated and that it is in the CD extras folder. When I open that folder I don't see anything that says anything about firmware updates. Am I overlooking something or is it called something else and I'm just not looking for the right thing? I've exhausted every book I can find and there isn't much about OS9 or firmware in any of them. I don't have that computer hooked up to the internet at the time so I can't download updates. I have access to an iMac (intel) if I can do something to a disk (I've honestly never tried it yet with the new iMac) I just hope you aren't going to tell me I bought the wrong disk, I have a dreadful feeling that $40 later I'm out of luck. I've already been majorly taken by the apple store that screwed up this computer in the first place (sold me and installed the wrong memory, then when nothing would work properly said the memory wasn't right, they took OSX out and said it would not run on this computer, installed OS9 without charging me because of all of the problems, but never gave me a disk for it. Then one day the dreaded blinking question mark appeared and OS9 would never run again so I'm back to good old 8.6 and thought I'd try again. I'd appreciate any help you can offer. It would mean the world to me if I could get this running in OS9.

You need a retail Mac OS 9 CD; the CD you purchased is specific to the model of iMac it's designed for, and won't work on yours. Apple does not provide firmware updates on an installation CD for computers that CD is inapplicable to.
No Mac requires a firmware update to run the version of the Mac OS it's shipped with; therefore, you will never find a computer's firmware update on a machine-specific Mac OS installation disk.
I can't find any major firmware updates for G3 iMac required for Mac OS9.2. Although there are a large number required before going to OSX.
So this does look like your iMac won't be able to use the OS9.2 install cd. Does it have a part number on the front of the cd ? We could then establish if it's for an iMacG3 or an iMacG4.
Search for "iMac firmware" in the Apple support site, and see what's available for your iMac. I remember CD firmware updates, an Ethernet firmware update, a modem firmware update and a general firmware update or two for my iMacG3. But again, none were required for OS9.2.2.
Thank you for this information. I'm going to have to get that computer online now so that I can run this update. I've been putting it off getting it online to try to get it running with OS9 first, but at least now I know there's hope. Do you think this disk will work to install OS9.2 after that update, or should I just try to return it and see if I can get the right one?
Mmm, I found that one, but it doesn't imply that it is needed for OS9.2.2. I also went through all the OS( updates, none mention a requirement for a particular firmware update for an iMacG3.
If I get the white disk with the orange 9 on it what version should I get? I've found one that says 2000 Apple Mac 9.1 (Classic 9) the part number is 691-2746A and I also found another that says it is a full install to run Classic 9.2.1. I really want to try to get the right one this time.
As Niel has stated, the OS 9.1 CD, p/n 691-2746-A, will work.
The p/n for the retail OS 9.2.1 Install CD (North American English) is 691-3334-A.
Both of those CDs will contain any firmware update required in order to install that version on your model. It would be advisable to test run the disk before proceeding to remove your existing OS 8.6 - boot to it, then try the installer. If you get the "your need to update the firmware" protest at any point, you will still have OS 8.6 on the machine and so be able to install the firmware update.
If that protest does occur, copy the sub-folder containing the firmware update for your model from the CD to the hard drive before trying to install it.
I just spoke with someone from FastMac (where I ordered the first install disk: 6913178-A) they assured me that this disk will work the the G3 iMac, once I get the firmware update. I am scheduled to get that machine hooked up to the internet on August 3, so I will use the info I got from you and the others here (much thanks) and get do that and then try the disk that I already have, before I go for another one. If that doesn't work then I'll get the one that you said. Right now I can't do anything until I get the cable guy there to get a line. Thanks for all of your help.
Just wanted to thank everyone for their help. I got the computer online today, updated the firmware, (thanks for that info) and was able to install 9.2 from the disk that I bought originally. Everything went in without a hitch! Thanks again for the help
