Can I use PPPoE without DHCP Server on?

Question

Can I use PPPoE without DHCP Server on?

I'd like to use APEBS as an ADSL-Modem, but I don't need its internal DHCP-Server, because of an existing OS X Server with DHCP already on.
Unfortunately I can't find any switch to turn APEBS DHCP off.

Any suggestions anybody?

Just set your Extreme Base station in "Bridge" mode. That should do the trick.

Thank you very much, but that is the point:
when I choose "PPPoE" instead of "Ethernet" connection I can't access that popup menu, because it is greyed.
"shared public IP Address" is automatically choosen, no way to change to bridge-mode!?

Why are you picking "PPPoE"? Pick Ethernet.

"PPPoE" could be useful to connect to the internet using an ADSL socket!?

Again to be as clear as possible:
*How to connect to an ISP ADSL wire while NOT using DHCP Server because there is already one on this subnet?*

I think what you want to do is enable PPPoE on your ADSL modem... if that is possible.

I don't think you can enable PPPoE on the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) and NOT have the AEBS distribute IP addresses.

This is pure speculation, but it seems that PPPoE and bridged ethernet may be inherently incompatible. Because of this no one at Apple may have seen the need to have PPPoE enabled, but DHCP disabled. I know it's a bad solution, but would it be possible to use the AEBS internal DHCP server, and disable the one running on the Mac OS X server?

I could stop DHCP services on that OS X Server, surely.
But there is no way to give some devices fixed IP as I can do with OS X Server DHCP for example.

I don't really like that idea.
Has anybody ever configured their APXBS using telnet?
Is it possible at all?

BTW there is no need to run DHCP on an shared Internetconnection.
I guess you mean NAT or PAT to share one Ethernet Address.

Sure there is. Simply give them IP addresses outside the range used by the AEBS's DHCP server. Give them addresses in the x.y.z.201 to z.y.z.254 range.

The only way that I have ever seen is to use one of Apple's software utilities.

There may be no need, but I can see Apple requiring that DHCP be running to reduce support calls. In bridged ethernet mode, it's probable that there is another server upstream that will provide DHCP services. With PPPoE, most users are going to require the router to provide DHCP services. Again this is all conjecture on my part.
