QT can not open file: The resource map is incorrect.

I have a QT file that I have used for year (last modified in 2004) that now gets the error message:

The movie could not be opened.
The resource map is incorrect.

Any ideas of what has happened?

I have updated to 7.2, I have all the 10.4.10 updates, I have booted off CD and repaired permissions, I have tried archive copies of the movie file.

I have the file on one of my servers (though it is 186MB)

I have the same problem, but with a whole load of .mov files as previously created by iMovie.

These files were copied to a NAS, could that have damaged them at all? I thought QT movies included all their "resource" data in the main data fork though.

Another potential source of the problem, could it be because I created the .mov files on a PowerPC Mac, and am now trying to open on an Intel machine?

Are there any utilities that can "fix" an incorrect resource map?

Strike the copy to NAS theory, original files have same problem.

Strike the PowerPC/Intel theory, tried to open original files on PowerPC Mac, says they are not movies.

Strike the QT 7.2 theory, said PowerPC Mac has QT 7.1.6 on it.

I'm stumped, and very worried that I've lost some important movies due to some sort of corruption sometime in the past.

I'm kind of hoping there's some sort of magic fix, maybe it's a problem going back to QT 7.1.6 that can be fixed by Apple, or maybe there's some way to retrieve the movie in the QT files?

Was this ever resolved? I have the same exact problem and I too only noticed it after moving the QT files to an external drive. Is there no way of fixing the resource map? Disk Warrior perhaps?

In searching for this topic on the internet, I'm surprised that not too many people seem to have been affected - perhapse there is a simple solution that I'm not aware of.

I too am having the same "teh resource map is incorrect" problem upon launching formerly functional QT.mov files. I had them on an external FW Drive which I think I improperly disconnected prior unmounting from the desktop. Subsequently, dozens of these QT movies open (or fail to) with this error. Did any of you notice unexpected crashes, driver or server disconnections prior to these errors?

Common among you all is first time posters and external drives.
Windows formats on the external drive are the most likely cause. FAT 16 has a 2 GB limit and FAT 32 is 4 GB's.
Resource forks are a Mac "thing" and are not used on PC's or most PC formatted drives. When moved to a PC formatted drive the resource fork is stripped from the file. Most files do not need them as we routinely share files with PC users with no issues.
I hope you have the original iMovie Project because you may have ruined those moved to the external. DV Stream (.dv) files are 13 GB's per hour so any clip over 20 minutes would become two files on a FAT 32 volume. iMovie and QuickTime can't put them back as one file and dragging them back to a Mac formatted drive will also fail you.

I finally found my solution for my lost iMovie timelines (for which the .mov included in the project would show the incorrect resource map error):

1. Right click on the project and select "Show package Contents"
2. Double click on the file finishing with a ~
So for example if you have a "My Project" movie double click on the "My Project~" file that shows under the package contents
3. (optional) File menu> Save as (under a new location)
