Random Deletion of email on Yahoo from iPhone

I have an 8 GB iPhone with active set up of Yahoo Mail pulling from their IMAP servers for the phone.

In the last few days I have noticed that emails that have been pushed to the iPhone from Yahoo are randomly self deleting off both the phone and Yahoo mail. Thus, deleting all trace of a few inbound emails and sent mails.

I did not delete the mails on my own accord on either the Y! Mail interface or the 8GB phone.

A couple of background pieces:

* Using OS X 10.4.10 on a PowerMac G5
* iPhone 8GB accessing Yahoo mail using the default set-up script
* Yahoo! Mail Plus
* Latest version of iTunes
* Sync services to Mail for Yahoo POP account on local Mac enabled

All was working well until last week when I noticed 4 pieces of mail that just up and disappeared from both my phone and Yahoo Mail...mail that I needed to keep.

If I can't stop this from happening, I am just going to have disable all mail access. That would be a real bummer as it was one of the features that enabled me to swap out my old Treo 650 for an iPhone.

Why the heck is this happening? Any suggestions?

Two weeks after posting this original topic...I finally had to turn off my mail on my iPhone and just rely on the web based version that is accessible from the phone's version of Safari.

It seems that even Yahoo's support does not have a solution (I also posted over there too)

I was losing too many pieces of valuable email...unread, read, etc. with the IMAP push script.

This is definitely an IMAP push/iPhone related bug.

Sigh.

This issue is why I stopped using Yahoo Mail a year ago. Maybe five percent of my mail would just disappear. I actually saw it happen a couple of times: I'd Refresh my mail page, and an email would just vanish. It wouldn't be in Trash, it would just be gone.

I didn't bother to even try to talk to Yahoo about it, as there was no rhyme or reason, and I of course could not duplicate it on demand.

So now I use Mac Mail, and am quite happy.

I've used Yahoo mail for almost a decade and have never had this issue UNTIL I got my iPhone talking to Yahoo Mail.

So, the argument goes that there has to be a bug or setting somewhere between the iPhone or the IMAP push that Yahoo is offering.

Going Mac mail is just not an option. I am not about to pay for .Mac for Mac mail when that service is very likely going to morph into something offered by Google for free.

No, this is a "feature" of the iPhone. I have over 8 years worth of email archived on Yahoo and never had a problem with it until my iPhone started talking to it.

Anyone else with ideas/setting suggestions?

I'm currently testing whether or not it's just the "in box" etc. from which e-mails are deleted. I created a new folder on the Yahoo account called "Keep Mail," and I have stashed a couple of e-mails there as a test when iPhone gets them.

So far, so good.

Don't know if this is something that might be useful to you or not.

I have seen this deletion in the past few days also, and it does not appear to be totally random. All the messages that have disappeared were messages I had moved form one folder to another at least once.

1. A message I moved to trash by mistake, that I then moved back to the inbox, was deleted the next time Yahoo emptied the trash folder (even though the message was in the inbox now).

2. A message put in the "Bulk" folder by mistake - that I moved to the Inbox - was later deleted by Yahoo.

I have used Yahoo mail for 9 years and never had a mystery deletion, so it is not a Yahoo mail-only issue - it looks like it is something about how Yahoo has the mail set to sync with the iphone account.

Can anyone else confirm that moving the messages makes it more likly to get this deletion bug?

I've used Yahoo mail for many years and the issue of having emails randomly disappear started after I got the iPhone. The push mail feature that Yahoo offers is great when it works, but it's really hit and miss. I haven't tired synching contact with Yahoo yet because with all their mail sketchiness, I'm hesitant to risk losing my contact data.

A new issue popped up yesterday (august 11). Since Yahoo hasn't been pushing email for a while, I have to manually go and check it. When I go to my Yahoo inbox, the action icon (rotating wheel) spins in the top left to let me know that something is happening and at the bottom of my screen it says "checking for mail..." The spinning wheel stops and my list of messages refreshes (supposedly, it's really not, I just see that stupid "load 3 more messages" or whatever), but the message that says "Check for mail...." stays at the bottom of my screen with its little spinning wheel icon and never goes away. It's like it's hung up or something. No matter how many times I go in and out of Yahoo mail on my iPhone, that message stays at the bottom.

Now a new issue. I deleted a message from my Yahoo inbox on my iPhone. When I go to my inbox in Yahoo on the computer it shows the message I deleted from my phone. When I click the header to view the message, I get an error saying "There was a problem viewing your message". So, it appears the message isn't really there, but the header remains in my inbox on the web version of Yahoo. Everything is totally out of sync across the board it seems.

(I agree: never a problem with Yahoo-POP before in many years)

I have the same configuration: Yahoo-POP on my desktop machine and Yahoo-IMAP on the iPhone. I am absolutely positive: in the past several days, Yahoo has deleted some of my mails.

==> Could it be a problem introduced with the iPhone 1.0.1 update?

Apparently, all the deleted mails had been read and (possibly but I'm not quite so sure) had first been read on the iPhone. Also, I have been using the iPhone more often in the recent days, and started to delete mails from the iPhone itself more frequently too (which I wasn't doing much before).

Both the iPhone and the desktop machine are configured to never remove the deleted messages but Yahoo still deleted them.

==> I am now reconfiguring the iPhone so that the "Deleted Mailbox" points to a separate mailbox of my own called "iPhone Trash", instead of pointing to the regular Trash folder. We'll see if it solves the problem...

This is a problem that has exisited since iPhone day back in July. I ran into this pre-iPhone 1.0.1.

I don't see this being fixed anytime soon...unless Yahoo choses to fix it. A support post I made to Yahoo concerning this was less than helpful. It is a bug with their IMAP implementation.

I turned off my email, but have started to use POP for Yahoo. Thank goodness Google is rolling out IMAP support in 2 months...I can then maybe think about trying that instead of Yahoo.
