Can I connect an HP laptop to my Mac Pro via Cat 5 cable?

Hi,

I have an HP laptop I use for work and can't get the wireless to work. It works fine from the router off a cat5 cable but I wondered how/if I can connect the cable to the back port of the Mac Pro and share the network that way; if so, how would be appreciated.

I'd like to use the laptop in my home office, hence the request

All you need to do is go to System Preferences > Sharing > Internet and turn it on via the ports you want. Be aware that your Firewall setting do affect Internet sharing so you need to open up the required ports.

Really simple! I should have know it but was looking for something more difficult!

I turned on built-in Ethernet port 2 on the Mac but still can't get a connection on the laptop (?)

Assuming you've shared the right connection and you've plugged into the 2nd Ethernet port I would simply try turning off the Firewall to see if it'll work. Normally connection issues are based in the Firewall settings.

I think you might need a "crossover" CAT5 cable to connect directly from computer to computer without using a switch or hub.

All Mac Ethernet ports are auto-sensing so while one should use a cross-over cable it actually isn't required and it makes no difference in one's ability to make a connection.
