The JVC Everio cameras record in .mod right, wich is mpeg-2? So will iMovie 08 work with the JVC cameras?

According to JVC the key is if your camera has a Firewire Connection. iMovie 08 will only directly import via Firewire. JVC MG505,155,555 all have firewire transfer. JVC says the .mod file format is the same however, ason the GZ MG27 and other JVC hard drive cameras and I speculate that if you drag the files over to the iMac via the USB, iMovie will be able to import them. If anyone can confirm that I would be most interested.

I have the Everio GZMG27US hard drive camera. After being told by the apple care iMovie expert that it would not work with iMovie08, I took my camcorder to the Apple store hooked it up via USB and iMovie opened and showed all the clips immediately. (I did not have to drag them tothe iMac drive or convert them to digital video. ) I could then, within iMovie, selectively import the .MOD files from the hard drive automatically, or, choose import all. It was slick. That put to bed a lot of misinformation..it did not need firewire. I would speculate that it will work with all the Everio Cameras as mine is a early 2006 model and Apple has already tested the latest MG155,505,and 555. the file structre on the hard drives is all the same. I bought my iMovie08 on hte spot...bye bye streamclip and visual hub!!!!

The adventure continues. When I got back home from the Apple store I installed iLife8 opened i movie 08 hooked up my JVC Everio GZMG27 via USB, the Everio HDD showed on the desktop of the iMac but iMovie would not import the movie files, they were all dimmed. I tried importing, dragging and every other thing I could think of. iMovie when you said capture from camera went to iSight, and no otehr camera was available.
Then, i shut everything down, restarted the mac, hooked up the camera, THEN opened iMovie and all my clips showed up just like at the apple store without having to open the Everio HDD. For some reason you have to have the camera up before you open iMovie for it to see the camera.

yes, thanks 🙂
There is no sound at all when you skim, preview or see it in full mode.
I even located the Quicktime movie in the file structure and there is no sound there either.
The green bars show no sound.

The genius at the Apple store had no clue and we tried another system with a fresh image of the drive.

I also talked to some Apple techs and they are filing a bug report for the Apple engineers.

I have a JVC Everio GZ-MG21U. It records video in MPEG2 format and used the .MOD files.

Using iMove08, I was able to see all movies stored on the camera by first haveing the camera pluged in via USB2, and turned on in playback mode. In the preview window all the videos were there and the sound worked correctly, I could hear all clips.

I then did an automatic import to an external firewire dirve, took about 15 minutes but all clips came in. I started reviewing the clips from the earliest to the latest, this is where something interesting happened: The early clips had sound, the later ones did not.

If I had to guess, I would say it's a problem with the import.

Any suggestions?
