light bleeding on the bottom of my new macbook pro 2.2

Just received my new macbook pro 2.2 from apple online and I very quickly noticed a band of lightness at the bottom of the screen. It seems to be most pronounced when there is a dark background screen eg dark gray, or black and white photos. It runs the entire width of the screen and is about quarter of an inch thick. Just wondering if anyone else has this issue or has any thoughts.

thanks

User uploaded fileWhile this is not normal it does happen with the new LED displays. it was a much bigger problem with the previous model's displays. If it bothers you contact AppleCare and discuss it with them.

I myself have this issue across the top of my display but it's masked by the menu bar (when there is one) and it has been fading over time so I'm not bothered by it. If that changes there's always the warranty.

I brought it in to a service center after talking to apple care. The service center said that this was a normal part of the new technology with led screens which I found hard to agree with as I felt that the problem was not be fully appreciated under the bright lights of the store. When I use it at home under dim room lighting the issue becomes very apparent. Again it is most noticeable when a darker screen is displayed such as the screen saver "cosmos". If it was at the top of the screen I wouldn't be talking about it as it would be covered by the menu bar but since it is always present at the bottom I feel it may be a defect. It seems my 7 year old imac has a more consistent lcd screen. Has any one had similar results with there new macbook pro screens? Is this normal quality?

I have had the same problem and took the MBp to Apple assistance. They said this "white leak" is considered acceptable as most MBP have it. I said I did not agree and I am about to request a replacement display in a more formal manner. The laptop is still under warranty, it must be replaced if defective. While this white stripe could be acceptable in other cases, it isn't for a $3,000 computer. besides, I have other two MBP whose screen is absolutely perfect. The Apple assistance guy this happens sometimes with early adopters as the screens have not yet been perfected.

Our new MacBook Pro 2.2 LED screen also has this defect. The bottom 1/4 to 3/8 inch of the screen is brighter than the rest. very noticeable. This is NOT normal, I looked at all the macbook pros at two apple stores and didn't see this on any of them. this appears to be a flaw in some of the displays. I will be taking it in tomorrow.

Just bought a new 17 MBP with the matte, hi-rez screen yesterday and it had a VERY noticable light band across the bottom. Took it in today and was given a replacement without trouble. The new one has it also but a bit less, although still very noticable. I'm going back again tomorrow to swap it out again. We'll see if they give me any problems about this one. For their top of the line pro model, it seems like pretty bad quality control.

Hey everyone,

I am on my second MBP, my first I had to replace because of constant kernal panics.

I notice that my new MBP has a line at the bottom with light bleeding just as you all have described. Im in the military living in Germany, and the nearest apple store is 6 hours away, so I really cannot bring it all the way there.

I was wondering if the majority of you all are living with it or if you are returning it for another. I was hoping you could tell me from your experience what apple considers "acceptable" and if you could tell me what you think of mine. Id hate to return it and get another one that KP's and freezes like my last.

I have to say that apple support was fantastic and really helped me out when I needed to replace my first one. Luckily I was back in the states on leave. I dont know about here in Germany.

Thanks.

As I stated in my above post, we have a new MacBook Pro 2.2 that has this same brighter strip at the bottom, about the same as the above posted pics. I took it in to apple store, and they could see it but claimed it was "normal" we compared it to the other MacBook Pros on display in the store and none of them are anything like this one. I finally got them to agree it was NOT normal, but then they said it was withing spec. They said they could not do anything. Then they finally said I could return the computer, but I had not purchased it from there and the college apple store where we bought it from has a "no return policy"... nice. So now we are stuck with a new computer with a bright stripe at the bottom of the screen. When I have some time (have been super busy with school) I will probably try and take it up with Apple customer service. I have already wasted many hours on this. very frustrating.

Be sure that wherever you buy your mac from has a return policy. Since the warranty is basically not worth anything for me at this point, at least for the "within spec" defects. Come on Apple, this is crazy!

It IS somewhat normal to have uneven brightness, but unless you have a dark background all the time or use Front Row a lot... you shouldn't notice the difference if you're a normal user. If you're a graphics/movie person, then yes, it'll make you want to pull your hair out. This problem is especially evident when brightness is turned up all the way. If you leave it at auto-brightness control or set it lower manually, it may make the issue livable.

no offense to the last poster, but it always amuses me when people try and downplay something they have most likely not seen. this problem is noticeable with pretty much all colors and backgrounds, and all brightness levels (I've tried believe me)
just imagine the bottom 1/4 inch or so being about a adjustment click brighter than everything else and you will get the idea. We have a g4 powerbook and its screen is perfect compared to this. We have 5 computers and have seen and used many other LCD screens so I know how they should and should not look. This screen does have other "normal" areas of uneven brightness which is hardly even noticeable compared to the bright strip at bottom.

I still haven't had much luck with this as I have taken it into two service centers with the same response from both. They both said not to worry about it that its with in spec. Like many of you that's not really acceptable considering the money put out on this thing as I thought I was buying a superior product. It is good to know that this is not a isolated issue. The previous response with the pictures is exactly what mine is like. It's still under warranty I just haven't had time to deal with it properly.

I don't know if I can say its "good" to know that others are having this problem, especially if Apple is refusing to admit that these screens aren't normal, but at least if my case isn't isolated and enough people make it known, they may finally admit there is a problem.

I'm currently serving over here in Japan and I have to make a 2 hour bus ride to a city called Fukuoka to take my computer to an Apple Genius. Imagine how fun arguing this problem will be in broken English.

I did buy mine online from Apple. Am I better off contacting Apple directly?
