when i first installed ilife '08 yesterday, neither iDVD or garage band would start without crashing. Oddly Garage Band will work fine if i switch to another user (and I figured out how to fix iDVD myself, by dragging the "installed themes" folder to the trash).
So now everything is working, except Garage Band will only work for my "other" user.
Any ideas?

OK, here is what worked for me, (Disclaimer: Your mileage may vary.) I was having the same crash at start up problem. Sometimes it would just bounce in the dock and then nothing would happen. Other times it would show the initializing bar, crash and then nothing. Other times it would do the same, crash but generate a "report this to apple" dialog with a try again box that led to another crash. Like all the other posters my other users could log in an use Garageband without any problems so I eliminated from consideration any problem outside of my user/Library folder.
I went back to my OS 9 days and started playing process of elimination in my Library folder. Move Preferences folder to desktop, restart, try to launch Garageband... crash. Nope thats not it put my prefs back.
Move font folder to desktop, restart, try to launch Garageband... crash. Nope thats not it, put fonts back.
Move caches folder to desktop, restart, try to launch Garageband... IT WORKS!
OK, start to put things back in caches folder, I did it in alphabetical order (so I could try a few at a time) but not replacing any new folders created by the system at the restarts. Everything got put back except the old Garageband and Logic folders (they were empty anyway). I could not recreate the crashing!
So, in conclusion I still have no idea what the specific problem was!
But... try moving your User/Library/Caches folder to the desktop and do a restart. Try to launch Garageband. Cross your fingers and see if it runs. If it does not put everything back and you still didn't loose anything but a couple of minutes. If it runs CELEBRATE by making a great song in Garageband, name it after me, get famous! LOL.
I've tried each suggestion here with no success. Reinstalled, fixed permissions, killed prefs, moved mentioned folders to desktop... no deal. iDVD also failed, but I was able to fix that per instructions on that thread (themes issue).
I will keep trying a few more things, but am just about done with this. Can we go back to previous garageband version? Until they get this sorted out?
I hope Apple isn't pushing this stuff out too fast and counting on us to beta test. Sounds a lot like someone elses OS. argh.
It happen to me the same and have done everything: repair permissions, erase all the preferences ( as the www.bulletsandbones.com saids, but I even did it before ). Seems that there is something "hided" in the user accounts that have been using Garageband before that makes the new version to crash. Or ( and it's a question to all you who have this problem ) do you have Soundtrack Pro 2 installed? I say this as they both share the loops library and may be more.. Just and idea..
I too have this problem with only my main user. I have uninstalled, moved, repaired permissions, everything in this folder and then some. Would anyone look at my crash log?

I got the family pack of iLife 08 yesterday, and installed it on my 2 Macs: a MacBook Pro, and a Dual-Core Intel Mac Pro with 4 hard drives (lots of memory).
The MacBook Pro worked as expected when I launched GarageBand, but when I opened in in the Dual-Core Intel, it kept crashing. Since both are Intel driven, I asked myself what's the difference in the 2 Macs?
The only thing I can come up with is that the MacBook has a lot less memory, and I have not installed all of my (large collection) of Apple Loops on that one. The Dual Core Intel Mac has a LOT of Apple Loops.
Apparently, there's some file on the Dual-Core Mac Pro that is causing the conflict.
When I try to open on the big Mac, I get a (very brief) message that comes up and goes away, and the words "conflict" and "MIDI" are there. I did a search for "MIDI" and found two files in Library/Audio. I compared the files there on my 2 macs, and found that a file called "impulse responses" is on the big Mac, but not the laptop. So, I removed that, restarted, and tried to launch GarageBand. No luck.
I've spent a couple of hours to get to this point, and I am still baffled. Perhaps my experience will save other from doing the same things I have done without success.
I set up a new user account, and the new GarageBand works fine. I still have no clue on how to get this to work within my own user account. Any help will be appreciated.
I hope that this helps someone. After 24 hours of pure torture, I got Garageband to work on my main account.
It was a BAD FONT. . . let me repeat BAD FONT BAD FONT BAD FONT BAD FONT.
If all else fails, try this:
1. Create a folder on your desktop called "OLD FONTS"
2. go to the /Users/
*/Library/Fonts folder, where "
*" is the user that is having the problem loading GB.
3. Move all of the fonts from this folder to the new folder you created in the first step. These are not system fonts, so it is okay to do this.
4. Try to load GB. Thank God and do a happy dance!
5. Put back fonts one letter of the alphabet at a time to find the offending font.
6. I am not going to put any back right now. I will add them back as needed.
If it works and you are happy, please send money. . LOL
