Volume Locked

On my Mac OS X, I am trying to adjust the volume. Unfortunatly, the volume has "locked". I can't move it up or down and the sound (which is at full volume) barely can be heard. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Mac, Mac OS X (10.4.10)

I had the same issue and noticed a red light coming from my headphone socket. It seems the computer still thinks there is a set of headphones attached. When I plug in the headphones the volume works fine.

If this is the same for you, try inserting and removing the headphones a couple of times until the red light goes out - this worked for me.
