MacBook Pro Sleep/Wake from sleep problem

As of today I have been experiencing a strange problem with my MBP. I can't wake my MBP when I open the screen although the machine is running. I also realized that I can't put it to sleep mode when I select it from the menu. Also, strangely, when I close the display to put it in sleep mode, the light stays on, instead of blinking. I already reset the power manager and the parameter RAM. I also have all my software updated. Any help would be appreciated.

Same problem with 17" MBP 2.33 GHz. Been doing this for a month now. Won't sleep when I shut the lid. Won't sleep if I select "Sleep from menu. And, if I hard reset, it will sleep for awhile (half-day?) then it starts over again. WHen it does sleep, often won' wake back up. Screen stays black.

I've talked to a friend of mine, currently working as a technician at an apple service center in norway, and another friend working as an apple reseller. They both told me that the problem is well known, and that it's caused by a defect in a component I can't recall tha name of. Anyway - they told me that the solution is go get the component replaced.

I'm very interested to see this as I have this same problem with my Macbook. It often won't sleep when I close the lid, and sometimes won't sleep from the menu. If you close the lid and the light stays on but the screen is black then the only way to make it respond is to restart. From all the threads I have read it seems like this is a hardware problem.

I have a MacBook Pro with Dell 2407 display. I have a USB wireless mouse and Bluetooth Keyboard and want to run it with the Macbook closed. I have had this set up since February this year. About 20 - 30% of the time, when I choose "Sleep" from the Apple menu, it goes to sleep (pulsing light on close catch bar), but wakes again spontaneously. Even if I put it to sleep again, and wake it sometime later, neither display (MacBook Pro or Dell) come on, but the computer is running. I have been frustrated having to hard restart with power button, wait for boot, close the lid, and wake it from the sleep induced from lid closing to get correct resolution on large display.
I think I have found a solution!! (read in MACOSHINTS.com) If the dual black screen occurs when I wake it from sleep, I press the power button once. This brings up the "Shut Down, Restart, Sleep, Cancel" dialog box (which I can't see since the screen is black). I press "S" on the keyboard for Sleep. Then I wait until the little light on the close catch bar pulses. Then I press the space bar to wake it (again) and surprise! the Dell Display comes on (then I have to close the MacBook Pro again etc.). Yes, this is klutzy and I "shouldn't" have to do this, but it avoids the hard reboot with potential data loss and having restart aps etc.

Hello,

I have the same problem. I also try to solve the problem with the related solutions on this post. But noting solve the problem.
I also notice that if the MBP is power off for about couple hours, the problem disappear. But appears again when i work again and make something.
I take the MBP to apple center support, and they didn't solve the problem, and they laugh.

I'm very disappointed.

I have a similar problem (macbook pro) where the mac will often try to wake from sleep and will often let me enter in my password at which point it goes black (I can still access things like volumn and brightness and hear system beeps). What I have to do is close the lid and put it back to sleep and then open the lid again and then usually I can wake it correctly.

This usually seems to happen if I try to wake it via the mouse (USB that is already attached.) I can't be certain that always causes the problem as it seems to not be consistent as to when it happens. It's definitely annoying though.

I have the same problem described by rickcr and others with my MBP 2.33GHz C2D, but very intermittently ie happens maybe once every couple of weeks. entering screenlock password usually lets me press keys and it sounds like something is happening (usually keyboard eventually beeps back at my random keystrokes), but display stays off.
closing and opening the lid only wakes it up correctly sometimes, more times than not I have to resort to a forced reboot by holding the power button down.

I've tried all the recommended things - reset SMC (many times), reset PRAM, run Applejack, Onyx etc
I'm running latest OS X v 10.4.10 and all updates. because it only happens every couple weeks it seems impossible to reproduce or track down a cause. I'm dreading having to send it into Apple as it's my main work computer, and we have no local Apple Stores to drop into talk to.

one thing: this past weekend I installed the latest EFI firmware update v1.4
I'll now wait and see if there's any change in this behaviour.
But has anyone else with this problem tried the update AND found it made a difference? a longshot but just curious

p.s. following may be an unrelated problem or just a different manifestation of the same sleep mode problem. sometimes my MBP also will NOT stay asleep. ie. I close the lid and it seems to go to sleep normally and I put it away, disconnected from all USB and network connectors (in my briefcase or simply on the desk). but I come back some time later and I hear the fans on full tilt and case very hot because it's somehow woken up even though still closed. if enough time has passed of course I come back to a silent MBP and fully drained battery. this problem is much less frequent than the can't wake from sleep issue - it's only happened about half a dozen times in the 11months I've owned it.
