MacBook Pro Sleep/Wake from sleep problem

As of today I have been experiencing a strange problem with my MBP. I can't wake my MBP when I open the screen although the machine is running. I also realized that I can't put it to sleep mode when I select it from the menu. Also, strangely, when I close the display to put it in sleep mode, the light stays on, instead of blinking. I already reset the power manager and the parameter RAM. I also have all my software updated. Any help would be appreciated.

Jitery trackpad as in upon waking up sometimes the trackpad will flip and jump from not being responsive to being jittery responsive to being SUPER SENSATIVE?

Both these issues showed up when I upgraded to Leopard, my 10.4 was rock solid never had a problem. Not too impressed with Leopard so far.

Again a MBP 2.2ghz

I am having the same problem as others. For last 7 months I have been plugging my laptop, lid down, into my external monitor at work. In the last week, this has not worked. The computer starts up briefly, then shuts down. It is like the MacBookPro no longer is able to stay awake when its lid is down. I have tried all the fixes mentioned above to no effect.

What is Apple's track record on these types of issues? I recently switched from PC world. Does Apple tend to be pretty responsive?

I've been having the same problem and, in addition to following the steps in this Macworld article, I also make sure that I disconnect all external devices before closing the lid.

So I've changed the sleep mode from 3 to 0, disconnect my speakers, mouse and power cord, then close the lid, wait a few seconds for the light to pulse (just in case) and can then move it. It wakes now with no problems (so far).

Just a couple of observations to throw in the mix that may be useful - maybe someone with a lot more technical expertise than me may be able to make something of them:

I was having the same problems with my MBP 15" 2.4 with leopard (sometimes going to sleep and waking up with black screen, sometimes not going to sleep at all, sometimes going to black screen instead of sleep but computer staying on).

Anyways, I noticed that:

(a) the 'black' screen on waking up from sleep is not actually off - it's just not backlit - shining a lamp/torch on the screen reveals that the LCD screen is on, but the backlighting is off. At least that gives me the opportunity to fumble around by torchlight with enough visibility to save my work and shut down.

(b) the problem only seems to occur when I have my mobile broadband modem plugged into the smartcard slot. Othwerwise sleep/wake works fine. The modem doesn't even have to be active to trigger the fault - simply having the card in the slot when the computer tries to go to sleep is enough to cause the problems.

Unfortunately I'm no techie and don't know what could be causing this, but it looks like (in my case at least) having the modem in the smartcard slot interferes with the screen backlighting and sleep mode in some mysterious way. I don't have any other smartcard devices to test whether it's the modem specifically or any smartcard device.

Hopefully someone can make something of this - or at least perhaps my observation about the backlighting might help someone avoid losing some valuable work sometime!

After updating to Leopard (clean install) my MacBook Pro's display would not wake from sleep (black screen). Reseting the SMC corrected the issue for me. I would also advise not using the "require password to wake this computer from sleep or screen saver" as I have found this feature to be buggy with sleep. Instead I would turn on fast user switching and go to the login window to lock the screen. Apple should make this feature available without fast user switching enabled. No need to completely log out. If concerned about security, logging out and or shutting down is the best way to go.

To reset the SMC on the MacBook Pro:

1. If the computer is on, turn it off
2. Disconnect the power adapter and remove the main battery
3. Hold the power button down for five seconds, then release
4. Install the main battery and connect the power adapter
5. Press the power button to restart the computer

Ok i'm having the same weird/stupid sleep/wake/dead screen problem. And i think i've singled out one of the problems. When i change the power source (from battery to cord vice versa) i have a 99% chance of have this problem. If i put the computer to sleep on battery and open it on battery i have no problem. but if the MBP was plugged to the wall and put to sleep, when i unplug the mbp and turn it on i lose the screen... I hope this will help apple find a solution to this problem. It is especially annoying when i'm doing work and leave it idle for a while, and then change location only to have a dead screen and lose all my work. Thank you for reading this let me know if this helps!!!!

I have the same problem (MacBook Pro 2.2, OS X (10.5.2)). Can't wake it up after I close the lid, but the computer is running. I run it on cable power entire time. Although I think the problem started when I got one of the software updates. At the same time a shared printer on other computer stopped responding to me. I sure hope someone figures it out soon.

Same issues with my computer:

-Close the lid, screen goes black but fans/disks keep turning. It never wakes up and usually doesn't respond to keyboard input (volume buttons, power button then 'r' for restart, etc...).
-WILL NOT sleep if I go to the menu and select sleep
-WILL NOT sleep if I hit the power button and click sleep
-It will sleep if I let it time out. In this case it will wake.

Other problems that have started at the same time as the wake/sleep problem:

-Occasionally hangs during shut down
-System Preferences/Network may crash when connecting to a wireless network
-Applications may crash when I try to network print with them.

Everything ran smoothly for a year and as far as I can tell, this wasn't caused by an update. I do have Windows installed on a partition and the wake/sleep was always an issue in Windows, but I don't run parallel - I always boot into one disk or the other.

I have tried everything above except a clean install.
Any other suggestions or news of an update to fix this?
