New keyboard

Hi all
Just received the new usb keyboard. No software comes with this and it states you have to download Apple Keyboard Software from apple.com/support/downloads. Well I cant find this software which makes the fn keys unusable. Anyone have a link to this software?
Excellent keyboard by the way, love the usb ports at the side.

Install this software to use your aluminum Apple Keyboard and take advantage of the special features.

Serious problem with the new slim keyboards. The Space bar is poorly designed. If you do not hit the space bar just right it will NOT create a space. Clicking it in certain parts will fail to type a space. Try clicking along the bottom of the bar. This is so bad I am returning the keyboard and going back to MacAlly iceKey.

But what about the Apple Keyboard software I installed. I hope it doesn't conflict with other keyboards. Is there way to uninstall it.

Hi David. You may be able to help me. I bought the new aluminum keyboard the other day, but didn't notice there was a software update required. Last night a keyboard software package appeared in Software Update, so I downloaded and installed it. Now virtually nothing works in the function keys except brightness and volume. No dashboard where it's supposed to be, no Exposé, and worryingly no F12 Preview In Browser, which I use a lot for Dreamweaver and web design. Dashboard now appears in F13.

I then went and downloaded the 1.1 Update you refer to, but this has changed nothing. Is this keyboard maybe not compatible with PowerPC Macs?

i've had the problem with the unrecognized special keys with a macpro....tech support told me to reinstall os...what i tried today is interesting. my machine has "macintosh hd" with 10.4.10, bootcamp, and winxp....BUT I have cloned only my 10.4.10 on a separate harddrive...today i was going to try the archive and install on the clone but before I did that, I tried the keyboard (with the software update that was required). interestingly, it worked, all the special keys do what they're supposed to do......went back to my original macintosh hd, reinstalled the software but the keys refuse to work. wonder if it has anything to do with bootcamp? and yes, the space bar still is hit or miss.

verified. i installed Apple Keyboard Update 1.1 with Pacifist 2.0 on my Dual PPC G5. rebooted and everything now works as expected. FYI, in Keyboard and Mouse preferences, "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys" is unchecked on my system.

before using Pacifist to install the update i would either get the playback and volume controls working OR F3 / F4, but not both at the same time. toggling that preference (above) would alternate which buttons worked and which didn't (and in the case of the playback buttons, whether or not they worked, or worked with an additional "fn" key press). some plumbing around in /System/Library (before applying the update with Pacifist) showed that some of the .kext files that are supposed to get updated were not.

i vote for Apple Keyboard Update 1.1.1...

This tip on Macfixit.com worked for me. My F3/F4 keys now trigger Dashboard/Expose as they should.

MacFixIt reader Joe Mullins writes: "I fixed the dashboard and expose keys on my keyboard. The problem is apparently that Dock.app isn't getting updated properly. I fixed it using my original install disks, 10.4.10 combo updater, keyboard update and Pacifist."

Joe's process is as follows:

Insert Install disk for 10.4.x and open /System/Installation/Packages/Essentials.pkg/ with pacifist.
Within Pacifist, navigate to /System/Library/Core Services. Click on Dock.app and click install. When it's uncompressed, it will ask if you would like to update or replace. Click replace.

When that's finished, open the 10.4.10 combo update package with pacifist and navigate to the dock.app again. Click install, and this time when it asks, make sure to click update.. not replace.

When that's finished, open the keyboard software 1.1 mpackage, click the arrow to reveal the contents of AppleKeyboardSoftware_Cmn.pkg, navigate to dock.app one more time, click install and then update once again. Not replace.

Once this procedure is finished, you can force quit dock.app and the keys should work.

I am using a PowerMac Dual 2.5 GHz G5 system and had trouble with the F3 and F4 function keys. The various suggestions and instructions as provided on several of the discussion threads didn't work for me.

Here's what worked for me to resolve the problem:

1. Go here and download the Pacifist utility which helps in exploring installation packages:
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/12743

2. Go here and download the Apple OSX update for PowerPC:
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx10410comboupdateppc.html

OR... get the version for Intel found here:
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx10410comboupdatev11intel.html

3. Using the Pacifist utility, open the OSX Update dmg file you just downloaded. You will be able to navigate to /System/Library/Core Services. Click on Dock.app and click the install button. When it's uncompressed, it will ask if you would like to update or replace. Click replace. There is an option to repeat this response for all files. Complete the process and then exit the Pacifist utility program.

4. Go here and download the Apple Keyboard Software Update:
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/firmware_hardware/keyboardsoftwareup date11.html

5. Install the Keyboard update and all functions should automatically work.

I've posted a lengthy review and support document for the new Apple Aluminum Wired Keyboard here:

Hi TNCLR,

this fix does the job, and then one extra: afterwards, my german localization (contextual menu for example) is gone for dock.app. And I can´t find it- neither the dock.app in the original install DVD nor the one in the 10.4.10 updater has a german locale in it! weird, innit? But where´s the german language then?

Any suggestion might help.

Best,

Mathias
