I can receive mail but not send it with my local account through Apple Mail. It is a POP account and whenever I try to send an email through it from Apple Mail, I get the error, "Cannot send message using the server smtp-server.triad.rr.com" and it asks me to pick a different outgoing mail server. My other server is my North Carolina State University account which I can only get to work on campus. I have talked to my ISP and all of the server addresses seem to be correct as well as the port and authentication settings. The only thing we could think of is that I recently installed Norton Symantec Antivirus as required by my school. It is possible that it is blocking the sent email because the admin has not given me the privileges to see or change any preferences. I tried deleting it and the error persists after restarting. The web client works so it does not seem to be a server side problem. This has been quite aggravating, can anyone please help me?
Thanks,

Are you separately authenticating the SMTP provided by your cable ISP? Many cable SMTPs are authenticated by the IP address of the modem, and separate authentication will cause failure. Try None as method of authentication of the Outgoing Server, and remove Username and Password entries for a test.
For the SMTP provided by the ISP, and which is not required to be separately Authenticated, you should normally be using Port 25. Port 587 is for separately presenting third party SMTP that are authenticated.
Who is your ISP, and can you provide me a link to their email setup requirements? Given that you have not been tryin use Authentication, how do you know that separate auhentication may not be needed?
In Mail Preferences/Accounts/Account Information/Outgoing Server click on the up/down arrows and observe how many different SMTP server entries there are? Click Edit and remove them all. Then re-enter the smtp-server.triad.rr.com without authentication and on Port 25.
thanks a ton ernie! it works perfectly. I have another error that has been popping up from my NCSU email, but I will post it as another topic as it is an unrelated question.
