Classic 9 problems

Trust me if I don't have to use the Classic Enviroment I don't. Problem is I really want to play Sim City 2000 and everytime I try and start it up it tries to open Classic OS 9. I tells me it cannot find Mac OS 9 System folder on start up disk in use and I may need to install it. Fine. I go to my old Powerbook G4 restore disk and click on the OS 9 install folder and try and install it. Within seconds it installs and everything seems fine. Ahhh but it's not. I then try and open Sim City 2000 the same message comes up and when I click on the system preferences I get this message:

You do not have a version of Mac OS 9 installed that supports Classic. Install Mac OS 9.1 or later (Classic Support).

Have I not installed it? Why won't it take? Do I need to go to the OS X Tiger install disks (I got the 4 CD disks) and try to install it from there? There is no way I'm going to restore my computer to the original state from 2002 and an old version of OS X to get to OS 9 just to play a game. Can anyone help?

I'm not sure what folder you're talking about? Do you mean the System folder on the Macintosh HD?

Yes.

The System folder with the the big blue "X" on it? If so I did a "get info" on that and it listed nothing. It did lead to a sub folder which was labeled Library. Again, nothing you mentioned was listed in that either.

Please read/follow the directions exactly. Open the System Folder, scroll down to System, click once on it, go to File Menu and select Get Info. If there is no System in System Folder, then it is not installed and that is the issue.

FWIW. In order to use Appleworks 6 on my Intel iMac I installed AW 6 on my PB G4. Had to have OS 9 in order to install. In order to install OS 9.2.2 I had to do a complete erase and install OS 9 drivers, then was able to install OS 9.2.2 and reinstall OS X. 10.4.10
I then connected the two computers by Firewire and dragged the Appleworks app to my Intel iMac.
Long complicated procedure, but it works!

Chris,

If Classic is installed on your computer, you will have a folder named "System Folder" that has an orange 9 on it. The "System" file that tjk speaks of is in there. It should look like a suitcase with the mac smiley face on it.

The folder named "System" is the folder with the blue "X" on it; that is the OS 10 system folder and does not contain OS 9.

Try opening up the Classic pane in System Preferences. When you open that, it will tell you if it can find a usable OS 9 folder.

For that matter, open up the Startup Disk pane. That too will tell you if there is a usable OS 9 system folder on the laptop.

9.2.2 is the minimum OS for the Ti 867, so if anything less than that is installed, it will not show up in Startup Disk
