I am trying to activate a new iPhone. I have the latest version of iTunes (verified). I have Windows Vista Ultimate. The computer recognizes the iPhone device as new.
iTunes does not do a thing. There is no sign that the iPhone has been recognized.
Thanks for recaping what you've tried. That's the exact situation I was in on my Vista Ult 32-bit system. Apple support pointed me to look for the driver usbaapl.sys which to this guy identified that I did not have a good install.
Sorry, I don't have another suggestion right now other than to (continue) to work with Apple support, they have got to have more info on this.
Meanwile if anyone with this problem has had luck with turning off their AntiVirus/Firewall software and reinstalling iTunes let us know. I posted this previously but the sequence that worked for me was pretty much (AV-FW off, unplug iPhone, uninstall iTunes, reboot, reinstall iTunes, AV-FW ON). I was able to see my iPhone (for the first time in Vista Ult 32-bit) in iTunes right after i reinstalled iTunes.
Try updating the driver and pointing it to c:\windows (including sub folders). I was having the same issue with Vista Ultimate 32-bit after upgrading from XP. Vista installed a camera driver but still listed it as "Apple iPhone" in device manager. Driver details showed it to be a Microsoft driver instead of Apple driver. If this doesn't work, make sure you have up to date USB drivers installed first.
Hope this helps. It took me a couple hours to figure it out because pointing to c:\windows\inf didn't work.
After weeks of struggling with this same issue, and having tried the solutions listed in this and other discussions; I finally was able to resolve the issue on my pc (Mac Pro running Vista with Boot Camp) by uninstalling both iTunes and Apple Mobile Device Support, rebooting, disabling my antivirus, disconnecting other usb stuff - then, from within device manager updating the driver for the iPhone by manually searching in the C:/program files/common files/apple directory. You may want to jump ahead to trying the driver update right off the bat (dont know if my efforts preceding that contributed to the solution).
I also have similar problem -- that everytime i would plug in my iphone to the laptop, it was showing a blank screen and looks like it was continuously rebooting.....and the itunes recognizes my ipod but not the iphone. And when i uninstalled my logitech webcam and disabled my antivirus software, it is now working well. Thanks to you.
For those on Vista Ult 32 with Dual Core CPU one experiement may to disable one core (bios setting). See if that makes a difference on your ability to detect iPhone within iTunes.
My connect problem was cleared up with the AV/FW & reinstall (details earlier in this thread). But when I attempted to update FW to 1.0.2 it would consistentyl crash iTunes on my Vista box (new problem). Setting the BIOS setting to a single core was the only way iTunes would not crash. I'm testing to see if a new BIOS will make a difference.
The problem is solved. The new version of iTunes, loaded today, has fixed the problem. For the first time in three weeks, iTunes has recognized my iPhone.
