Bellsouth "send" e-mail issues

I am having a Bellsouth send e-mail issue that has cropped up in the past couple of weeks (no changes in settings on my side). Don't know if it has anything to do with Bellsouth's conversion to AT&T or not.

Basically, I can receive e-mail and send newly created, blank e-mail. However, I am unable to send e-mail with attachments or reply to e-mails received or forward e-mails received.

I tried a suggestion of changing the port number from 25 to 587 to no avail. I confirmed my Preference setups with Bellsouth tech support and they say everything is configured OK. Thinking it might be Apple Mail, I downloaded and used the Thunderbird e-mail client, but that exhibits the same problems noted above (similar message about problems with the STMP server or the server is unavailable or is refusing STMP connections. Again, this only happens with certain types of sent e-mails noted above).

I am at a complete loss and don't know what to try next. Any suggestions????

I had problems when I converted to Mac last Spring, and most of the problems came from the DSL Tech Support Team.
Please make sure that your settings haven't changed from the following.
Go to Mail - Accounts
POP Acct Incoming Server: mail.bellsouth.net
SMTP - Outgoing Mail Server: mail.bellsouth.net
Click on Server Settings:

Sever Port Should Be: 25
Make sure SSL - Secure Sockets Layer Is *NOT Selected*
Click OK
Select Addvanced on the upper right of the Accounts Tab.

Port should be : 110
*Do Not Select* Use SSL

Make sure the following are selected:
1) Enable This Account
2) Include When Automatically Checking For New Mail
3) Remove Copy From Server After Retrieving A Messagee

Hope this helps.
I work for at&t - formerly BellSouth, and we haven't done any email transformations for our FastAccess customers, and I'm sure that when we do a Transformation, you will have Dual (bellsouth -at&t) emails for a while so you can advise Family and Friends.

First, the following statements are made by myself on my own time and are not those of AT&T.

I work for AT&T and let me first say that I am sorry to hear about your issues. I do believe I have a fix for them...

I have had success with both Windows and Mac customers after having them change their MTU size. I have been using 1468 as the new value (default is 1500). The following link explains how to make this change:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303192

To the good Dr. that posted at the end of this thread, this should even solve your issues with the wireless. It is obvious that the change does not need to be applied to you wired network adapter, just the wireless (usually en1).

As stated at the end of the MTU change document, the wireless interface changes will be loss on reboot and sleep.

If the MTU change works you might want to have a go at this (not needed for wired interfaces):

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107474

If anyone has a better solution for making the MTU changes on the wireless interface permanent, please let me know. I do not have my own Mac to experiment on anymore. I promise to rejoin the ranks soon. 🙂

Please let me know if you have any questions and I will provide my email if requested.

Again, this information is from my own mind and not from AT&T. I mention my employment only to lend a little credibility to what I say and to try to restore your faith in AT&T despite your recent experiences.

Thanks

"to try to restore your faith in AT&T despite your recent experiences"

UidZero, that worked! And it was SO simple. I thank you very much. But about my faith in AT&T. Why couldn't or wouldn't the corporation provide such a simple answer to the many of us experiencing this problem?

Thank you again for using your personal time to be represent'n your peeps and helping the helpless.

I am happy to hear that it worked.

After I worked with a few customers today and felt comfortable that this will resolve the issue, I passed the information around internally before I left the office today. Since I came across this thread while researching the scope of this problem, I thought I would share it with all of you. Now that we know the fix, this information should be more readily available to other customers going forward.

Thanks again for using AT&T.

hmm im still having the same issues as everyone else despite the fix provided above. It seems to be relatively router independent, as I have had no luck at home, school or other places using a variety of connections and routers. My mother actually called to tell me she was having the exact same problem, and she's using Mail while I use Entorouge...
