Photoshop CS3 causing new iMac to hang

I have an issue with Photoshop CS3 hanging my iMac.

When the application is active but in the background and unused for a while and I return to use it the entire machine becomes unresponsive, the mouse cursor can still be moved around the screen but nothing can be clicked (wireless mighty mouse), force quit can not be invoked to kill PS.

I have to resort to switching of the machine in order to get it back up.

Has anyone else seen this, either on an iMac or other intel macs..?

Andy,
It seems that there are many problems with the new iMacs freezing up. Just type in "freezing" or "freezing iMacs" in the search engine. I have read where some people were just waking up their iMacs from sleep and it froze on them, while others were looking through stuff in iTunes, and others were doing graphic intensive games. I have also read places where a lot of people have said that the 1.1 update from Apple has caused their "freezing" problems, while others have said that it helped with the "freezing" problem. I don't know that there is really a fix for it at this time. From what I have been reading, most people are saying that it is an issue with the graphics cards in the new iMacs. I don't currently have an iMac, and the problems that I am seeing has helped me decide against getting one for the time being, that is, until Apple gets these issues resolved. If you have a local Apple store, you may want to make an appointment to take the computers by there one at a time to let the geniuses look at them and see if they can figure out what's going on. Who knows, you could get a new computer that would work out of the deal. 🙂

Hi all,

I've noticed different sorts of freezing in our new iMacs and they can generally be categorised in three classes:

1. Connection failure of the wireless/mighty mouse. Actually a lot of pseudo-freezings are of this style while you can still move the mouse and get screen response when hovering over something that has a hovering behaviour. This can be easily treated with a re-initialisation of your mighty mouse - use the bottom switch of the wireless mighty mouse.

2. Non-responsive user interface but movable mouse cursor. When hovering effects are not shown this indicates something wrong happened to the OS X GUI. Some big graphical apps can cause this, I've seen Google Earth freezing up my iMac once as well.

3. Complete freeze - even the mouse cannot move. This rarely happens and if it does, it suggests a hardware problem - if the keyboard is responding, then it's something wrong with the graphics card; if the keyboard stops as well, the machine is simply dead. Most often it is because of overheating, of either the CPU or the GPU (both can crash the entire system).

Hope this would help a bit 🙂
