I've had my new imac for 4 days and every day it keeps freezing this is normally on a screen saver or front row, I have tried force quit but nothing seems to help and in the end have to restart my imac, I have also done clean install but it is still keeps freezing up.
This update is for 20-inch and 24-inch aluminum iMac computers with the ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO graphics processor, running Mac OS X 10.4.10 with iMac Software Update 1.2.1 for Tiger, or Mac OS X 10.5 with iMac Software Update 1.3 for Leopard.[/quote]
You may have a different problem - I've seen several posts from Freezers who didn't get the ASIC hang log (I'm one of them - none of my error logs shows anything like what you have posted).
Previously I was able to trigger a freak out by doing a variety of things like running the screen saver, photobooth, iphoto, some games. I spent some time messing with it last night and it didn't freeze once. Hopefully the update has fixed the problem.
If it happens again though, I'm going to take it in for a replacement.
Cautiously optimistic here, but the latest firmware update has allowed me to run my iMac for about 24 hours so far without a freeze. I anticipated potential problems to surface this morning after start up but again, so far it has behaved. The logic board has been replaced on this unit, running Tiger 10.4.11. It had the 1.2.1 update applied earlier. That's where things stand at the moment.
Only complaint: it's hard to type with your fingers crossed.....
It would seem the new ATI Firmware just released this week by Apple, has apparently fixed my iMac!
I can not crash it using the usual methods, all mentioned in this thread. The worst offender for me was Disney's Toontown.com on-line game site. My kids love to play on Toontown, but I have not let them up until now since it would ALWAYS crash the iMac within the first minutes. They have now played it for hours and no problems to report!
With all updates installed (10.5.1 + iMac update of a few days ago), burning DVD with iDVD + running Firefox and creating a recordable Automator workflow caused the screen to freeze (could not use mouse or keyboard).
iDVD burn completed in the background, then shutdown/restarted iMac remotely (via VNC screensharing from my 20" iMac running Tiger).
Can you check your system log to see if it is the same problem? Go into the Utilities folder, run Console, and look through the system log for an '** ASIC Hang Log Start **' at the same time as the hang.
Picked up 24" Alum iMac from Apple Store. Although they has ordered and had prepared to install both a new logic board and a new video card, the update appears to have solved the problem. They ran an overnight "stress test" and repeated the apple hardware test and there is stability.
If there are problems I'll post back, but it appears to be a solved issue.
Has anyone else had a problem since applying the "freeze patch" where Front Row intermittently goes in and out of a black screen while watching content from movies or TV shows? My freeze problems have disappeared but this new problem has appeared.
I too have had this freezing issue with my 4 day old imac (24" 2.8ghz). I am running Leopard 10.5.1, and it still downloaded this firmware update!
TRY IT NO MATTER WHAT!!
Apparently even though I have 10.5.1, it was lacking this update. SO FAR everything seems cool. If it stays operational tomorrow, I'll cancel my service appointment tomorrow night.
I almost (ALMOST) felt regret for not buying a PC. All day I've been on the phone with tech support, and using my still working 7 year old HP laptop for checking email.
Haha, think you're roughing it? I was using my Windows laptop a few days ago. 7 years ikd is nothin'. I have one from '94. The very first Dell Latitude CPx. Came out a few months before I was born. 128MB RAM, Windows 2000 Professional, 20GB hard drive, 16MB Graphics card. I even got lucky with a processor with a couple hundred MHz. Almost hold a charge for thirty seconds, too.
Yeah, you're jealous. Unfortunately, I had to deal with desktop PCs, so I'm stick with these 2.66GHz processors, 1.24GB RAM, 256MB graphics cards, Internet, and horrifying 160GB hard drives. Consider yourself lucky to be running Windows ME, or XP, or whatever you have. Quite frankly, I think you should've spent the extra buck and gone for what I got.
lol
Cheer up, you don't have to deal with the worst of it 😉
You could be running my system when the power's out.
It'll only be worth my system if the power's out for thiry seconds.
I might get lucky and have the charge last the full outage!
Best of luck.
Since installing 10.5.1 I have been experiencing NEW problems. After Apple replaced the video card a few weeks ago, this thing was almost OK. Now it is much worse. Every time I wake it up, the screen looks as if a dark blue curtain comes down from the top, and then a pop up tells me to that I have to restart. Then it seems to work, but I don't trust it! I am still using my 5 year old flat panel for important stuff. I DO regret getting this machine!
There's nothing more frustrating than a Mac misbehaving to this degree. It is so NOT the typical Apple experience.
So far, I have to say that due to the last Apple firmware update things may have just turned to the better for my own freezing screen issues . The logic board has been replaced on this unit, running Tiger 10.4.11. It had the 1.2.1 update applied earlier. It was awaiting a back-ordered new graphics card install but in the meantime the Apple repair center installed the firmware update and I took it home until the part gets here. This is the fourth day of no freezes and I've run it through all the procedures that would have made it an ice cube a week ago. Still a little wary but am warming up with optimism. I'm debating whether to tempt fate with a new graphics card at all now. Apple must have been installing new cards like crazy, evidently since that component is backordered in a number of areas across the country. Still no word when mine might arrive anyway.
I'm having such a great time with the iMac now---it's beautiful with a brilliant display and is presenting my photos in fantastic fashion. I'm braving using it today with a client again to go over a photo project--the ultimate test for me. I had three separate client live presentations ruined when the unit had frozen before.
The enjoyment I have with my, finally, now working iMac is too intense for me to even think about installing Leopard in the near future. Will want to watch the boards for a good long while before venturing into that potential headache after my experiences for the last two solid months. I received my iMac September 17th and apart from a single day or a day and a half of no freezes, this last four-day timeframe (11/16-11/20) is the first really productive time I've had with it. I refuse to rock the boat at this point.
The firmware may have been the trick to beat this thing in my instance. Cautious here, but best wishes to many more of you that it can help you as well.
You must have been a hall monitor one as a kid Rick... the issue is that the Mac randomly shuts down.
The syncing was fixed but I had to take it back in to the Local Apple store. My Mac hasn't been losing power as must but I still have random shut downs. I can also get it to shut immediately down when trying to import a CD.
