Isnt this suppose to be a PHONE

I just got the iPhone and alot of really cool features. But isn't it suppose to be a PHONE? So why are features not available as with other cell phones.

1. Can't get ringtones I would like
2. Volume is way to low to hear it ring, even at highest setting. Appears this is a real issue with alot of users
3. Receive a call!!! No reminder alert if you were not near your phone. Other cell phones will "beep" or something if you miss a call or miss a message, etc.
4. Not so important, but the World Clock for Denver, Co is not correct. Is is using Central time and Denver in on Mountain Time. If you go to the web for World Clock, Denver is correct. What is Apple doing to settings?
4.

You assume that the volume and speakerphone issues are design-related, when in fact they may be manufacturing issues. Certainly, given that I (and I would guess others) don't have notable problems with either, it would appear not to be inherent to the product and would logically be more likely down to batches with these issues coming off the production lines. Given we have no way to quantify the proportion of units with problems (note, no suggestion there isn't a problem) it makes trying to draw conclusions about it rather difficult.

As to the design metaphors, the rolodex model caused me to rethink the way I organize my own data because I have always tended to be more on the chaotic side - a 'method' which my WM6 device was well catered to support but where search was essential as a consequence. Having moved my methodology more towards the rolodex principle, I've found the simplicity of that approach rather compelling. It is not perfect however, and some flexibility would not have gone amiss! Still, I think it's an indication of the intention behind the design. Simple metaphors implemented with minimal 'unnecessary' clutter. The problem is that what's unnecessary to one, is critically important to another.

Why are those who start a thread with some completely valid complaints about the iPhone instantly attacked (even though you claim you are not being "snotty")and put down simply because they are not totally enthralled by the device they spent $599 like so many blindly are? This is supposed to be a helps forum...is it not? You are not helping the OP or anyone else by belittling him and telling him he should have done more research before he made his purchase. That is snotty and arrogant, no matter what you call it.

We, the non-Applezealot iPhone buyers have every right to expect this device that was so ballyhood and hyped to perform at a higher level than it does...period. Most of us DID research, and are still somewhat dissatisfied that Apple forgot, or conveniently chose to forget some of the most basic phone performance features...volume & call quality.

Perhaps we can step down off of our collective high horses, and help instead of hinder...

Perhaps the contention might be that the complaints aren't all that valid. Complaints that, for example, the iPhone doesn't have a feature the user expected or wanted. However true such a complaint may be, the device is what it is and people can and should determine whether it does what they want and need it to before they buy, not after. If they fail to do that and come here to post about it, they also fail to note that as a user-to-user forum, they are not actually talking to Apple but to other iPhone users who can't do anything about their complaint.

Oh, so:
We, the non-Applezealot

is not intended to belittle those who perhaps don't agree with you?

Most of us DID research, and are still somewhat dissatisfied that Apple forgot, or conveniently chose to forget some of the most basic phone performance features...volume & call quality.

I would suggest to you that while the vast majority of people who bought an iPhone (and continue to buy them) actually do research their purchase first, two things are very clear: firstly, that some did not, and thus cannot entirely be surprised that the device didn't live up to their assumptions about what it could and couldn't do, and secondly, that of those who buy iPhones, the majority - perhaps the vast majority, are actually quite happy with their choice and the way it works.

Perhaps we can step down off of our collective high horses, and help instead of hinder...

I couldn't agree more, but I would suggest to you that there are some who are simply beyond help. At least in terms of complaints about lacking features when none of us here are in a position to add what they want to exert any influence on Apple to do so. As users, we are in exactly the same boat as each other, so the only people who can be helped are those with technical questions for whom there is a user-centric answer.

Excellent point there. Hence the age old saying "You can please some of the people some of the time, but you can NEVER please all of the people all of the time". I think that is pretty much the way it goes. Can anyone imagine if a company tried to please every single person that may buy their product, how costly that would be. Apple produced a very fine product when they came up with the iPhone, and I for one am very happy with it. Although there are some problems with it, for some owners, but I believe whole heartedly that Apple will take care of their problems in time.

I'm happy to say that I've had no problems with my iPhone at all. I really feel bad for those of you that have had difficulties and I hope that the problems that you are having are taken care of in short order. However those of you that feel like the phone is feature lacking, just relax, they will update the phone sooner or later. It may not be everything you want, but hey, I'll have to refer you to the beginning of my post 🙂

Have a nice day everyone.

Amen!!! and I have been an Apple user continuously since 1984.

I wonder about the 200 AT&T personnel that tested the iPhone - did they have 200 perfect models and did they all test next to a tower?

With all my Apple experience I am bothered that the introductory hype does not match more closely the end product - this is the first time that has happened that I can recall with any Apple product - computer or laptop anyway but maybe the Newton.

Finally, the things that Jobs has said like "We are five years ahead so we don't have to do anything for five years" make me nervous and I can just imagine what those with no experience with Apple are feeling. I personally think that things will improve with future updates but I don't appreciate snide remarks, unhelpful research or return suggestions and arrogance while I am trying to resolve my problems or responding to others.

Correct.

This is a user to user help forum for technical support issues. To paraphrase from the Terms of Use - unless otherwise noted, a post should be a technical support question or a technical support answer.

As with everything else - there is a right and wrong way or in this case a better or more appropriate way to ask questions.

One way or what seems to be the more common way here will get a number of folks on the defensive and the more appropriate way without the extra and which are usually uncalled for remarks, gripes and complaints. Sure many have gripes and complaints but this is not what these discussions are for.

Let's say I visit a MS provided help forum and ask what is the most recommended antivirus, spyware and adware protection for my new Windows PC. Simple question which should get a simple anwer.

Or I say along with my question - I can't believe MS hasn't been able to resolve all these security issues - they've had more than enough time to get this resolved - I expect and demand more darn it from a company that made the founder the richest man in the world, has 90% OS market share with monopolistic practices to squash competition.

Now what type of reaction at this MS provided help forum would I have with my first question vs the same question along with the extra serves no purpose stuff?

Here is the only thing that bothers me a little. With all the threads here, the ATT forum, Howard and other forums, the reviews by Consumer Reports, PC World, etc... all about the low volume issues it takes gall for some users to try to deny the problem or make it look like anyone that mentions the low volume issue are anti Apple or just complainers.

I have used 5 different iPhones and ALL of them, every single one, has a much lower volume than my former BB Pearl or vx9800 and less than half the volume of my home landline and speakerphone. Its not even close.

The low voume, low alert tones, etc.. are all 100% real problems documented in magazines and in just about every forum that mentions the iPhone.

Seriously, you mischaracterize the posts and persons to which you refer.

I don't see anyone denying there are issues with volume some users are having to contend with or stating that those reporting these issues are 'anti Apple' or just complaining. What I do see is perfectly reasoned responses that indicate that some users have this and some users don't - and that further suggest that given there is no actual way to quantify it, it's not possible to determine the proportion of users who are suffering. Perfectly true, and entirely pertinent.

I also see a number of people posting a lot of complaints about 'missing' features or functions which don't work appropriately. These are a matter of option and choice more than anything, but neither of which can be addressed here and neither of which fall into the remit of Apple Discussions as a whole. Providing feedback to Apple directly is the best way for anyone with these concerns to give voice to them.

It doesn't help to mischaracterize the nature of what is being 'discussed' here.
