Could my CPU be dead?

I can't get my beloved beige to start up. The power supply comes on but no chime and the hard drive only makes a little noise before going quiet.

I have two drives in the computer. At first one drive was acting squirrelly. Then while trying to do maintenence, it wouldn't boot to it. Eventually I couldn't even get the 2nd drive to boot.

I've checked all the usuals. I got a new battery in case. all cards are seated. I hadn't been inside the box for a long time, so I'm sure I didn't move anything.

I worried at getting no chime.

Any ideas? Is my poor ol' tired, overclocked and overworked chip dead?

You're probably thinking of Operation Headgap Systems. I've only bought batteries from them but they seem to have a plethora of Mac parts.

I've also heard of folks here getting cables from Cables to Go and Monster.

Do you have any hard drive cables lying about from a past HD expansion? Those should work, at least for a test.

Having lots of fun here with the G4 MDD but still have my Beige set up and networked in a spare bedroom for photos. 200GB of hard drive space holds a decent number of photos.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking of. I went there. Didn't see any ribbon cables. I did find a few other sources. I think I used all I had to get where I'm at now.

A friend may pass one of his G4s to me in October when the new OS comes out. He's gonna buy a new one then. He uses it in his aerial photo business, so I suppose it's all maxxed out. They already have a couple of G5s. So, I'm hoping to get it.

Is the new OS supposed to support the G4? I suppose so.

I didn't get a chance to work on the beige yesterday. Maybe today.

All you need is a cheapy for testing. I'd visit a place like Radio Shack. When I needed a special hard drive ribbon for my Beige, I found exactly what I needed at the Local RS. It that fixes the problem, you can leave it or, for peace of mind, order a premium cable on-line.

I can't find any sysreqs on the Leopard pages so we'll have to wait. They may be waiting to post them until they finalize all the features. Seems I saw them once somewhere but it could have been speculation, a 'no-no' around here!

Hope your G4 deal works out. My MDD came from work, too. I negotiated the purchase of all the Mac gear in my office when I retired in April. Had to leave hard drives behind but that's not a big deal. The same week I retired, Staples put WD Caviar 250GB drives on sale for $80--I bought two and both and now in the G4.

I'm glad that worked out, myaka. When we first started seeing the problem in posts here, we were pulling our hair our until someone tried the cable swap in desperation. Apparently, the CD-ROM cable has a shelf life because a number of these showed up over a period of a few months. It was as if all those cables got together and decided to die at once.

Thanks guys,

I haven't had a lot of time to fool with it, but I think I have it narrowed down to the CD and/or cable, or my ATA controller card. I'm gonna put my money on the CD and/or cable.

It's pretty much the only thing(s) that hasn't been changed out in the box...(except for the bombproof 266/66MHz chip that is over clocked to 315/70 MHz).

I'll get it working. I'm sure. I have to go and find some cables first. Then we'll see.

I hope Leopard supports the G4, because I may finally migrate up with the one from my friend. I want to get a new iMac, but it's still not in the budget, yet.

Allen,

"I may finally migrate up with the one from my friend. I want to get a new iMac, but it's still not in the budget, yet."[.i]
The key to getting a G4 or better into the budget is to have your wife work on a computer. My wife wanted a home computer to keep up with her iMac at school. I kept the G3 in the basement so her basis of comparison would be the 7200 DT in the sewing room. A mini was soon followed by a few hand me down G4s from the Seattle son.
