Macbook Pro Warped Lid Issue

I have seen many postings on this problem. I bought a 17" Macbook Pro, and when I took it out of the box it had the warped lid problem. In a laptop that cost $3500, I couldn't accept this shoddy workmanship. Particularly since my Mac Pro is a work of art, and perfection. I noticed that after using the laptop for a few hours, the problem actually worsened. I thought that perhaps heat may be causing the problem. I contacted Apple care, and they told me that they are aware of the problem, and that my Apple store would help me. I took the computer to my Apple store. They were very helpful, and got me another laptop. I asked if we could open it there to be sure that it was not warped. They opened it, and it was warped as well. They appologized, and got me another one. This one seemed ok. I took it home, and within a few hours of use, it too was warped. In fact, warped even more than the first one. I returned this one for a refund. The Apple store treated me very well, and was extremely helpful. There is no doubt that this is a defect, and no one at Apple Care, or the Apple Store told me that this was normal and acceptable. In fact they were very solicitous, and seemed willing to do whatever was needed to make me a happy customer. Here's my question. Is Apple going to address this problem anytime soon? I would like to purchase another Macbook Pro, but not until this defect is addressed. (And I don't mean with rubber stick on spacers.)

Is Apple going to address this problem anytime soon?

Nope.

Apple simply loves to produce a bad batch or two of MBPs, just to be able to read horror stories in these forums...

OF COURSE APPLE CARES. You have first-hand experience with how Apple treats their clients. Why should you think that Apple wasn't concerned and won't address this situation?

By "addressing the issue" I think the poster means is Apple actually going to FIX the source of the issue - not just keep being nice by opening as many boxes of messed up ones until they find one that is good. We had to return a 17" MBP for the same issue + a display anomoly issue. My replacement, as of yesterday, just had it's display whack out on me too. This makes 3 of 7 Mac laptops our org has purchased in recent years that have display issues.

You can see the latest display problem here:

To me, there are some serious quality control issues going on at Apple. Like - lack of quality. For just my laptop, due to these issues, I'm going to have to now reinstall everything for the 3rd time in not even 6 months. That's totally unacceptable for a professional environment. We purchase equipment to get things done, not to have to monkey around with over and over.

And this from a self-proclaimed Mac evangelist. But I'm getting quite leary of their laptops right now. Even design flaws such as the display lid not tilting back as far as our older Titanium MacBook, so much so that using the laptop on one's lap is a struggle. Whose brilliant design "fix" was THAT at Apple? I'd love to have lunch with them. 🙂

I only had my macbook pro for almost a year and about a month ago I started to notice my on the left side of my notebook is up more than the right side. Here the photo to best describe it. Is this what you guys are talking about?

i took mine to apple. not only does mine shut with a bigger gap on one side than the other but the display doesn't even open to it's minimal size. however the "genius" [how do they manage to get that title?] claimed nothing was wrong with it. please explain to me why five other macbook pro owners i know have theirs closing perfectly on both sides? if this is spec apple is off their rocker.

Hmm.. this won't solve the issue but might explain it a little.
I think the warping on the lid is cause by concave shape of the metal,
doesn't help when the plastic casing is held together with super strong
sticky tape! Then it's "clipped" to a flexi aluminium frame which holds
the TFT unit itself. Perhaps apple is trying to cut down on cost,
making the case slightly thinner? I dunno..

But i can tell you, before i got a perfect machine i went through ten
other MBP's in a month!! It kinda annoyed the staff at my local AppleStore
so much so, the manager offered me 10% discount for my next purchase. Hehe..

I discovered if it wasn't a heat issue, it's a case issue or a sticky
keyboard. I sometimes wonder have they started hiring monkeys for there
Q&A? It seems for many other companies, advancement means better goods.
I'm sorry to say but for Apple, the opposite is true. Bad Apple!!

I bought a MBpro about 6 months ago. I noticed the screen warped a bit but didn't bug me too much because I use an external monitor most of the time. Now I think it's warped more and I feel like the screen itself looks a little distorted because the screen is at an arc. I did a google search and sure enough this is a really common issue. The computer is amazing but for $2,600 this is not cool. I guess the consumers aren't picky enough or there aren't enough pro buyers to create a buzz to get apple to recall them - I know that's not realistic given the nature of this defect.

But hopefully future models will be of higher quality...

I have a brand new MacBook Pro 17" and have seen some of the things mentioned in this thread. However, unlike most of you I really don't care. It is going to happen! Especially over time. If you were to survey a group of MBP's after about a year you would see almost all of them will be uneven on one side or another. This is typically due to how one closes their computer lid. If you are right handed you are prone to close the lid with your left hand and therefore the right corner over time will start to sit higher and vice versa for a left handed person. Now this is not 100% b/c there are a few people who do close the lid from the center, but if you just simply observe how people close their lid you'll notice a pattern.

Now, were talking a cosmetic issue....how many of you keep your lids closed? Most of the time the lid is open and the computer is in use, so as a cosmetic situation it really shouldn't be a big deal. I know that I am only the opinion of one man, but there are certainly bigger fish to fry.

at least the staff at your apple replaced your computer.
i worked in a store for the longest time, and we didn't sell computers or anything of that caliber, but i always remember them telling me the customer is always right. i don't understand why when i go to apple and tell them i want mine swapped out for one that isn't screwed up that they tell me it's perfectly fine. i used to love visiting apple and looking at the macbook pros, and when i finally decided to take the plunge, i get one thats not in good condition and flimsy as an oragami swan.

honestly. what happened to apple making amazing laptops that lasted for ages. my powerbook g3 still functions, after almost 10 years of loyal service. i can't imagine this one making it five, even if it never left my desk.

I had the same issue with the gap on the left side. It was actually becoming harder to open the lid. I decided to send my MBP back to apple and I received it in the mail today. They fixed the uneven lid but did more damage than good. Now where the lid connects to the base is crooked and slightly damaged. My mouse button is not the same either. Super sensitive and almost doesn't even click. I already called apple and I am sending it right back. Hopefully they will be able to fix all of the cosmetic damage they caused. Less than two months old and 3200 dollars is too much to spend on something that isn't perfect.

call me dumb...no reallycall medub 😉

i just found this thread.thanks for thepost on thisissue.I thought it was just mine. Minenever seemed to closeverywell, and always didn't latch good.

well, after reading through this thread and giving some fresh attention to my mbp 15".
I took matters into my own hands. i just simply tweaked, ok, BENT the lid slightly. seems to close now.

pretty simple sollution, low tech too 😉

butseriously, i agree it is obviously a QC issue at apple. but at least in this case the sollution wasn't so difficult. perhaps not the "right" sollution. but no harm done in what i did. Seems to close better than ever. the gap is still there slightly. mine was actually caved, so i maded it concave in the middle where the latch is. very minor force was needed. seems great.

disclaimer:

**BEND AT YOUR OWN RISK. I am not affiliated with apple or a technician. **

just a guy that realized the simple fix.

too bad itneeds the fix though 😟

I just received my 15" MBP toward the end of August before school started. I noticed the same strange warping effect on only the left front corner of the lid fresh from the box. I am a bit confused as to what to do about it. The way i see it we get a few options

1) We can go though apple support and keep getting refurbished MBP laptops, some of which are reported to be in worse cosmetic condition than the ones sent in.
2) Those of us with an extended Applecare plan can call and have the problem reported on our record incase it presents any future problem with the display, the latch, or any other cosmetic deformites that may arise as result of the warping. ( get a refurb when the problem is sovled later )
3) Lastly, we could make a huge fuss about this. Some of the other forums show that some 60% of people who purchased a 15"/17" MBP anytime in the last year have this problem, many of these people have either gone through multiple refurbs, or just settled with a factory defect that could pose a problem later on.
The problem is minor and cosmetic in nature from the box, but theres no promise from Apple that your laptop will be taken care of if it creates some greater issue down the line. I am sure i dont have to preach to the choir about this, it is not merely an issue cosmetics if a lid warp applies pressure to a display it houses. LETS FIX THIS PROBLEM for everyone
I am Calling Applecare tomorrow and im sure they will be more than happy to help me. In my opinion we all pay extra money for our electronic devices from apple for three reasons : They work well, they are appealing to the eye in every way, and their services is top notch. If for whatever reason an Applecare employee tells me "it's in the specs" like i saw in a youtube video, or doesn't personally assure it will create no future issues ill get my money back, you all deserve the same. Consumers should never settle for less than they paid for!!
