Downloads all appear as 'Secure download'

Can anybody help me please?
Since yesterday, whenever I download a file on to my desktop it is greyed out with the name 'Secure download' underneath it, rather than the name on the attached file.
There has been no problem opening the file, but it is a nuisance having to change the name for each download.
Is there something I need to change on a menu somewhere?
If so, I'd like to know what!

Many thanks for nay help that anyone can offer.

Cheers,
Peter

This is a new problem that others are reporting as well. If you search this Safari forum for "securedownload" you'll find the other topics on this subject.

Everyone else reporting this is using Safari and Yahoo webmail. Is that the case for you as well?

After comparing notes, people here are beginning to think this is an unfortunate interaction between Safari and Yahoo. We're not sure of the cause and we don't know of any solutions yet. But people here are troubleshooting this issue and I imagine we'll figure this out soon.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for the replies.
It is comforting to know that others are having the same problem (though I hope there is a way of resolving it easily).

Yes, I do use yahoo webmail since that's what my broadband provider uses.
However the problem only seems to have started since I downloaded some files from accessing them yesterday from a publisher's site that I do some work for. I don't know if that helps.

Here's hoping!

This just started for me about four days ago. Same problem as you've all described. Manually re-naming the files that download is a pain. I've gone through System prefs, Safari prefs, as much as I can and nothing's working. My files still open okay, except in PPT I've noticed it takes a lot longer to open the metafiles (don't know if that's related or not). Oddly, the PPT icon does show up on the desktop, but not Word, PDFs, or any format pics.

Thoughts?

Hello,

I've been having this same problem for a couple of weeks now. I too use Yahoo mail, but this has never happened before. It doesn't hinder the downloading process but it does label it as "securedownload" and the icon doesn't show the application it uses to open (Powerpoint or word). Sometime i have to manually select which program to use such as powerpoint from the finder...and that does take longer to open it.

i tried resetting Safari and restarting but that doesn't work.

I really wish that this would get fixed.

Anyway, thanks for the help in advanced!

I posted earlier today and did some checking with a mac friend of mine. Here's what he said:

"I thought I ran across a fix but I was mistaken. There are a lot of people having the same problem with Safari when they use their Yahoo! Mail, but some reports problems with other webmail services.
It first started happening to people around the end of August. There is currently no fix as far as I can tell. Most people report that if they use Firefox it works fine. The support people at Yahoo! Mail are telling people to use Firefox.

My $0.02 as a computer geek, Safari is a buggy browser. Web developers tend to loathe making their web sites work with Safari. Switch to Firefox, not everyhting Apple touches is perfect, amd their
browser stinks. They really haven't put forth the effort to fix Safari's problems. They should just preload Firefox on OS10 and be done with it already but they want to try and compete in the browser market so Safari it is. Or just live with it, it should get fixed eventually, when they get around to it."

I have had the same problem as described in the other postings, i.e. regardless of the name of the file, when it downloads it is saved as securedownload.pdf (securedownload2.pdf, etc.). I thought I had the problem because I had received a secure response from a financial investment firm with whom I do business, and they called it securedownload. I could never get it to work on my iMac and had to use a Windoze computer to open it. Apparently it is a new type of secure messaging.

Anyway, I don't know if my thinking is correct (that it was after I had received a secure response from a financial investment firm), especially since I've seen all these other postings. Like the other people I am not having the problem with Mozilla Firefox, so may start using it for my e-mail. I also use Yahoo e-mail.

Thanks for sharing your experience - here's mine - I hope they fix Safari soon. I'm surprised that this wasn't seen before Safari and fixes were released.
Does Apple want us all to switch to Firefox?

Comments : When I use Safari (2.0.4) to download files from my Yahoo account, I get all files downloaded with the filename "securedownload" instead of the original filename. When I use the Firefox browser (vers. 2.0.0.6), I get the correct filenames.
How can I get the correct filenames when I use the Safari browser????

I am having the same problem. It started a few weeks ago. It causes problems if I try to email that file to someone else because they can't open these files unless I rename them and add .doc, .pdf, or .jpeg. or had sent the email I received the file in as a forward. Often those emails contain information I don't want to forward to someone else. This also means keeping track of what file things go to is more difficult.

I contacted ATT Yahoo and they said it was a Safari issue. I don't know who to believe. I don't want to reset safari because I need or want some of that history. I have no clue how to fix this.
