Sync MP3 files on IPOD nano 2nd gen

I have some mp3 files from college that I would like to listen to on my Ipod. I created a playlist and sync the ipod, but the mp3 files do not show up. How can I sync mp3 files to my ipod

I was able to do this by dragging the tracks from the main iTunes listing to the iPod icon on the left.

When I try to drag the file from I tunes onto the Ipod icon it drops down the playlist on my Ipod but will not allow me to drop it in.

Select the iPod in iTunes.
Click the Music tab.
Make sure your playlist is ticked under *Selected playlists.*

I did that. I hit Sync and when I go back into the Ipod that particular play list does not show
