Midi Software: Sibelius or Finale?

Hi,

I understand this isn't a forum to discuss either of the mentioned programs, but I figured if anywhere, people who use the above software packages are more than likely to use Logic than anything else available on the Apple forums!

I have used Sibelius for a good few years, and I love it. I find it very easy to use and a great tool to visually create a score to print off. I also find it easier than using the MIDI editor in Logic to create MIDI parts (then simply export/import the MIDI file from Sibelius into Logic). However, I am aware of Finale also, and have heard many good things. Has anyone has experience with Finale? What did you think? How does it compare to Sibelius (if you have used Sibelius as well)?

Any feedback left would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Steve

Sibelius - like working with a sheet of paper.

Finale - like working with an autocad drafting program to typeset your score.

There are pros and cons of both, and you can accomplish similar results in both. Each have demos you can download and try. I personally find Finale a headache to use as I have to constantly pour over user forums and guides to figure out how to notate certain things, where in Sibelius most notation options are all logical and easy to implement.

Well, if you like Sibelius, stay with it.
Personally, I have been using Sibelius for a few years, and I really don't like it. I very often print to pdf, to open the result in Adobe Illustrator to make final adjustments (curves, and many details) I also work with custom music fonts, that is a pain with Sibelius. Update 5 brings MIDI things, but almost nothing on the notation aspect.
My hope is that Logic 8 will not loose completely its notation aspect. I doubt it will come with a professional level music notation package, but if I could do Logic -> Illustrator instead of Logic -> Sibelius -> Illustrator, I would be very happy.
Finale, why not, but if you like Sibelius, don't change.
You can also visit the Finale and Sibelius help forums, to get an idea of bugs, problems, etc. None of these programs is really great.

I've been using Finale since version 1 (1989) and Sibelius since Version 2 (about 1999 I think)

Sibelius 5 and Finale 2008 are both good tools, both have bugs, both have their strengths and weaknesses.

Given a tight deadline and a huge job I would use Finale every time, it's way faster. I recently set a 600+ page A3 opera score in 6 weeks in Finale and made a set of parts (2087 pages) in 10 days. There is no way Sibelius could ever match that. The downside is it's a lot harder to learn. You can download a copy of Notepad free from the Finalemusic.com website. It's far from the full version, but will give a feel of the interface.
