However, there are a lot of whiners that seem to believe that these new features are some sort of a constitutional "right."

So......let them whine.......everyone has a right to their opinion. Being negative back does not solve the problem. Apple will decide for themselves if they will update the 5G series. Neither you nor anyone else here will change that. Though it is obvious that the vast majority of 5G owners posting here would like to see the update, so I assume that Apple cannot be oblivious to that fact. The question is whether or not they will choose to ignore it, regardless of their possible reasons.

I think, and this is just my opinion, that it isn't even a matter of whether Apple "owes" us or not. It is simple ethics. I was quite impressed when Apple saw the error of their ways and offered the $100 dollar credit for those that instantly bought the iPhone. Now I am left wondering who was the bean counter who suggested that to get at least another $249 dollars out of us that own at least video iPods by offering the iPod classic with new features within the interface. I think this is terrible. Would I/Should I buy $249 dollars of cover art spiffiness? I own a 1 year old 30 gig video iPod. You would think that this could handle/be compatible with the new features within the new iPod classic software. The fact that they don't offer this as an a update really disappoints. It creates a vision of either laziness or plain and simple greediness. Bad mojo, Apple. I see you didn't learn from your previous mistake concerning the iPhone price-cut.

Yes, mine works perfectly as well. But that is NOT what this thread is about. We a specifically talking about the lack of support for upgrading to the new features offered by the iPod Classic interface that should be just as compatible with at least the 5 gen video iPods.

Are you serious? I bought mine just 12 months ago (30gig video iPod, bought 9/14/2006). It is totally capable of displaying the new features and graphics of the new iPod Classic. I don't believe it is a hardwarde issue. It is just a software issue, and I am pretty much totally sure of that.

Once again, how do you know this? Please cite authorities, knowledge base articles that support this contention.

I do not think they will add an update for coverflow as well.
We can hope, but that will not be sufficient i am afraid 😟

they better update the 5G ipods!! come on guys is not THAT hard, is it?

I hope that someone that had bought new iPod classic dumps the firmware and share the file on eMule so all people that had bought iPod 5.5 2 weeks ago can have the new firmware.
