Is iPod Classic compatible with existing accessories?

I was thinking of purchasing an iPod Classic but I noticed that, when you shop for accessories in the Online Apple Store, many of the accessories that are listed as compatible with the 5G Video iPod are not listed as compatible with the iPod Classic. Two accessories concern me most: my Bose SoundDock and my Sonic 55 video playback system.

Is it the same universal connector and does it handle video in the same manner (in other words, do I still have to enable TV Out on my iPod Classic and, when I do, will the video still play on the Sonic 55's larger screen like with my 5G Video iPod?)

I phoned the Apple Store and asked the rep this question, but all he did was look it up in the store like I did and then he said, "I guess it's not compatible."

I think it would be a big mistake on Apple's part if this update made existing accessories unusable.

Has anybody had any hands on with this issue?

It's not now! The page has been updated with a red note about incompatibility.

Insiders in Cupertino tell me the hardware is compatible but the firmware supporting the camera connector didn't make it into the Classic at first ship. So there might be hope for a firmware upgrade.

If you purchased your iPod in 2005, it is likely the Video iPod (the Classic has only been out for about a month). As far as version 3.0 of the software, I believe that Bose is likely referring the software version for the latest model listed in the manual (which is not the Video, but appears to be the gen 4 Photo). The latest version of software for the Video iPod that I am aware of is 1.2.1. Since the dock connector on the iPod did not change from the Photo to the Video, you should be able to use the speakers.

I can't understand what your problem is, I have a 160gb Classic (Black) that plays perfectly on my Bose Spound Dock and ALL the remote control functions work as well - in fact apart from the sound quality and volume being better on the Classic than my old 5.5g iPod there is no difference.

Inititally the website did how the classic as being supported (i have a screenshot), but it was later removed. I hope your sources are correct and that it will eventually be supported. 1.0.2 firmware still doesn't support it 😟

Can you pmail me that screenshot? (realestatemagnet at mac dot com.) I'm going to try and return my Classic and am going to need something concrete to convince the Apple store to take it back since the 14-day return period has passed.
