Log and Transfer Troubles

Alright Guys (& Gals!),

I will admit I'm newer to the FCP arena so this may just be my ignorance but I'm pulling my hair out trying to get footage from my P2 cards into FCP 6.0. I shot the footage on a Panasonic HVX200 in 720 24p. I've tried importing directly from the camera as well as from files on the HD. The clips pop up in thumbnails perfectly both ways and I can preview them without a problem. The problem occurs when I attempt to add it to my timeline. It doesn't matter if I drag a clip to the queue or click "add to queue" - each time I get the little spinning update arrows and then it stops like it imported correctly only it says that there is 1 clip queued that is idle. Then when I click on the imported clip in the lower left hand corner of the Log and Transfer window, the little status arrows turn into orange stop signs with an exclamation point and says there is no data. What???? I don't get it. Can you help me figure out what I'm doing wrong? Thanks!

Did you choose the correct Easy Setup preset before starting your project (press Ctrl-Q choose DVCPRO - 720p24 from drop down menu > setup)?
1.Close all open projects.
2.Choose File > New Project ( torename & save project, choose File > Save Project As & type what you want to name it/where
3. Connect the IEEE-1394a to device & computer then turn on your camera
4.Choose File> Log And Capture
5.Mark, Log & Capture clips from there
Make sure your Logging Bin is set to the location in your project

Well, I re-did the easy setup and chose

Format: Panasonic DVCPRO HD
Use: DVCPRO HD - 720p24

Thats how I shot the footage. Tried Log and Transfer again and no dice. DJ - I didn't Log and Capture because I'm using P2 cards and to my knowledge can't do it that way. I've noticed that in the demos I've seen, as soon as the user clicks "add selection to queue" or drags it to the import window, the status bar at the top of the import window (the bottom left quarter of the log and transfer screen - wasn't sure what else to call it) the status immediately starts flowing and showing progress. When I attempt it the bar does nothing - even as the status arrows are spinning. The status arrows do spin next to the clip but when they stop, the text on the left of the status bar always reads "1 clip added to queue - Idle." And then as soon as I click anywhere on the import window (again lower left quarter) the status arrows turn into the orange stop sign with the exclamation point. When I mouse over the stop sign it says, "Error: No Data". Any ideas?

Have you worked with 24p footage before? If so I'm guessing your fimilar with the telecine process used with "Cinema Tools". But FPC works very well with the Advanced Panasonic 24p cameras & can capture directly to 24 fps even if you need to postprocess clips its faster than working with pulldown material. Maybe you need to modify a DV capture setting & check "Remove Advanced Pulldown" from DV-25 & DV-50 sources in the Capture Preset Editor. If you have already captured 2:3:3:2 advanced pulldown @ 29.97 you can use FCP to remove it by:
1. Select the clips
2. Choose Tools > Remove Pulldown.
Editing 24 fps
1. Create new squence
2. Choose Sequence > Settings
3. Click Load Sequence Preset button @ bottom
4. Choose DV NTSC 48 kHz - 24 from pop-up & click OK (I'm assuming your not "PAL")
You might want to adjust your monitor for edit you can do so by System Settings > Playback Control tab > set Pulldown Pattern menu to 2:3:3:2
Hope this helps.

Yes, I work with FCS2 + I also use the the AG-HVX200 thats why I thought I could help, especially if your under time constraints. The only difference is I use the FS-100 instead of the P2 cards for all my DVPROHD footage (P2 cards just don't have enough storage yet for an extended period) & never had a problem but like I said I don't use the P2 cards for DVPROHD, still that shouldn't make much of a difference. You have a great camera to work with FCP6. Perhaps you could give me some details on your system & what steps you are following before & after the problems arise so that we could run a bit of trial & error. It could be something quite simple in the editing process instead of the capturing. Be sure you converted your 24p to NTSC format at 29.97 interlaced fps before its brought into FCP.

I'm having the same exact problem with Final Cut Pro 5.1.4... Does anyone know what the problem is? Even if there is a workaround that someone can offer to me so that I can get the footage into my computer in a backwards way, I'm game for that in the interim. I can't downgrade my program to 5.1.1 or 5.1.2 like some have suggested theoretically, because I don't own it, so, that type of information doesn't help. Please let me know if you know anything.

I have seem similar behaviors under certain circumstances. Clips would appear in Log & Transfer, adding them to the queue would start importing them, but then no clip would appear in the browser, and the resulting quicktimes in the capture scratch would be unrecognizable to FCP.

We solved this by changing the location of the scratch disk. No idea why this worked, or what it didn't like about the other scratch location.

You may also find it useful to copy the P2 files to a hard drive before attemtping to import them to FCP. I know that log & transfer will retain logging information you apply to the P2 media, but I don't know whether it needs write access to the location of the source files in able to be able to work with them in this way.

Terry,
Did you had any luck with your problem?
I'm having the exact same problem you had. I'm running FCS2 (final cut 6) and I'm trying to import from my G DRIVE (SATA) footage that I imported from my FS-100 (I have a bunch of folders named CONTENTS under several subfolders) but at the time I want to use log and transfer I get the same error you got. The difference is that I'm also using an AJA LHe card and I'm using the 720p preset for capturing.

FIGURED IT OUT

I have no idea why this works but it does. Go to the Log and Transfer window. From here, locate the little tasks icon top center. It's to the right of the search box at the top of the pane that displays all clips that can be transferred - looks like a little gear with an upside down triangle to it's right . . . click it and then choose "preferences." At the very top you should see a check box that says "Remove Advanced Pulldown and Duplicate Frames" It's apparently checked by default. UNCHECK IT. The box should be empty. Then hit okay and try to transfer again. Mine works like a charm now.
