auto load on startup

auto load on startup

I am running Mac OS X on an Intel based MacBook Pro. The mail program autoloads every time I start the laptop. I have tried changing settings in preferences, and looked in the startup folder in the LIibrary (nothing there). Any ideas on how to stop mail from autoloading?

powerbook, Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Open Accounts preferences, click on Login Items, delete the Mail application from the list.

Thanks for the help, but I am fairly new to Mac and am not sure what you mean when you say open Account and Preferences then the log in tab. Is this in the mail program, as I cannot find it there.
