Safari Problem with Hotmail Windows Live

Hello

Hope someone can help!

I was using Safari fine with hotmail. Then I was recommended to upgrade to Windows Live MSN version of hotmail... and the problem started!

Whenever I hit the reply button, the message is condensed with no line breaks and it's difficult for me or the receiver to read. I think this is called re-populating their message?

I would like to switch back to the old version of hotmail but i don't know how to. I've also emailed hotmail and I've had to reply!

I then downloaded Firefox and the replying problem doesn't appear. But I prefer Safari... any tips?

Thanks

PS I can't update to a higher version of Safari (I am 1.3.2) because a later version won't run on my OSX 10.3.9 laptop! Is there a version 1.3.3 or .4/5/6 ? I could only see a much later version...

I view the classic version of Hotmail. You should see a link on the today page. So you can revert back to the classic hotmail version. Another option is to use Firefox 1.5 or higher. This browser works with Hotmail better. Even the new Live.hotmail. Microsoft says the way Safari handles Live is the problem.
Considering Safari has only about 3% or less of the browser usage. It might never be supported by Microsoft.

They automatically updated everyone to Live whether you want it or not. I tried the beta earlier and reported that even when using both Safari and Mozilla/Firefox 2.0, I could not access my mailbox but was technically logged in, for I could see the Sign Out indicator. Anyway with all the cookies setup and exceptions to accept such changed, I still could not access my In Box. I sent many emails for help to msn via their Help feature and I get the idiots telling me of cookies prefs...just one circle. I finally signed up to Yahoo with their free service with happy results. Live Hotmail is crap. They don't really care about Apple/Macs. They even admit having little support for the mac side. I can use Opera to access LiveHotmail though but I hate Opera. I am awaiting MSN's next response to my last complaint. It *****. The old hotmail was far superior - it worked!
Sorry I have no solutions.

Hi-

I have the same problem. I've had problems for a week or so and finally yesterday Hotmail stopped working completely. I thought it was because of Safari Beta 3, so I removed it and reinstalled Safari 2 from the OSX installation disk. But, this did not solve my problem. Firefox worked, but I didn't want to run 2 browsers.

I have a work around. It may work for you. Safari 2 (not sure about 3 Beta) has a hidden Debug Menu. I recently read about it in one of the mac magazines. On this menu there are several browser 'emulators' under Debug/User Agents. The MSIE 5.22 mode (Internet Explorer) didn't make Hotmail work, but Netscape 6.2.2 mode allows you to use Hotmail.

You activate the Debug Menu by entering a command in the Terminal Application. This is completely reversible. It is located in the Applications/Utilities folder.
1) Launch the Terminal Application
2) Completely exit Safari before entering the command in Terminal.
3) Type the command (then enter): defaults write com.apple.Safari IncludeDebugMenu 1
4) Exit Terminal. Relaunch Safari. The Debug Menu appears to the right of Help.
5) Under Debug bring up User Agent sub menu and choose
6) To remove Debug Menu follow 1 & 2 then substitute: command defaults write com.apple.Safari IncludeDebugMenu 0 in step 3.

Hope this works for you.

Dear eyebiter 1980,
Sorry for a late response, for I just got back from a job in the field on Kauai. I will try your suggestion. I have always shied away from using anything with "The Terminal" but will attempt. But again, I wonder if Hotmail Live is worth it. Yahoo so far has given me NO problems and the space given is more than adequate.

Thank you again. My "new" MacBook Pro is not contaminated with MSN/Hotmail stuff yet. I removed them and will keep this book clean.
Thanks again!!!
Sincerely,
MacOwner 1pm hi time

For those of you who don't want to use the Terminal, try this (worked for me):

1. Empty your cache (cmd optE)
2. Edit/change your hotmail bookmark from whatever you had before to simply http://www.hotmail.com
3. Try to log in -- should work for you now (as of 10.16.2006 @ 7:35 PM CST)

Here's what you should see after you log in:

Hi, [NAME]!
Tuesday, October 16

This is the classic version of Windows Live Hotmail
This version works better with your browser. The full version of Windows Live Hotmail runs on Internet Explorer 6.0 and higher (make sure you check the system requirements before you install it). The full version also works on Firefox 1.5.

I had the endless loop of death up until this point, but it appears that everything works fine now (since I didn't want all the "full" features in the first place!) Hope this helps.

The problem is your cookies. Open Safari and go to the Safari menu > Preferences > Security > Show Cookies. When the list of cookies appear, look for the .live.com and .msn.com entries. Select and delete them. When finished, quit Safari and then relaunch. Head back over to hotmail.com and you will need to enter your credentials again. This has fixed the problem on multiple machines.

While you are in the list, you might want to clear the ones from .microsoft.com as well. However, I can not confirm that they are causing the problem.

Well, guess what? Today, I went to log in and the same loop of death happened again. I tried just hotmail.com, and that didn't work. But, I somehow did get it to work again by doing the following:

1. Typed in http://hotmail.msn.com (that started looping)
2. Typed in http://mail.live.com (that started looping)
3. Typed in http://by134w.bay134.mail.live.com

The last URL finally took me to the new login screen (username & password on the left with the new "Live" logo instead of the hotmail stuff) and I was able to check my e-mail.

Don't know why this worked, but it did. Guess I just got lucky yesterday. Hope this helps.

Wow, it really is true. Misery does love company. Like you guys I do prefer Safari and my Hotmail has gone AWOL. Ironically, my work machine which takes an act of god/administrator permission to up date is still working just fine with hotmail. However, my home mac which I update every week is having the problems. Which makes me wonder if there might be something on the Safari end as opposed to the Windows Live end that might be causing the problem. I feel like a mac-traitor writing that, but I've got to call it as I see it.
