My cord is MELTING! - MacBook Pro

Help! I have called all over New York City and the Apple Online Store for a new *Apple 85W MagSafe Power Adapter (for MacBook Pro-MA938LL/A).* I was told that it was impossible to order or that I would have to wait almost 6 weeks!!! What is wrong??!!! I plugged my computer directly in a wall socket and after a few minutes.....I saw and smelled smoke!! *The cord had MELTED near the power pack!! Another defect!!*
Two year ago, I purchased a Powerbook G4. There were problems with the cord slipping out of the computer. The MacBook Pro "solved" this problem with a magnet connection that falls out and now MELTS!
School starts this week and I cannot retrieve class programs because I can't start my computer!

Well, I just became victim to the melting MagSafe. I set up an appointment with the Mac Genius for tomorrow (this is incredibly lame thing to have to do) and hopefully they'll have one in stock. Cord frayed at the adapter end just like everyone else.

I use mine exclusively for work and I need the cord ASAP. I don't care if I have to buy one. It just better be at the store tomorrow! How am I suppose to install Leopard tomorrow night without power?

Apple! Where are you? My MBP was purchased in August, 2006 and while it hasn't melted, yet, the white cord next to the Mag Safe bit has suddenly opened all the way around. $70 - $80 for a part that you should replace free to avoid a class action law suit, seems excessive.

If you want to avoid a class action law suit I would at least comment here soon on this issue. It's an easy suit, and you will lose. Just wait till one of these mag unsafe connections does some property damage or, God forbid, hurts someone. Then you'll be wishing you did something.

The potential liability here is staggering.

Same problem here. I take all my notes for college on my MBP, and my cord is up in smoke also, effectively locking all my school work in a useless aluminuim prison. So is there any chance of getting a rebate/reimbursement for a new pwr adapter from Apple? Or am I better off just looking on Ebay?

One thing I am not seeing in the comments here is calling the Apple support line. I would try that before I started throwing around class action threats and baiting Apple with what ya gonna do bout it comments. I had the same problem, MacBook, not a Pro, but same problem with the same MagSafe connector. I explained the issue to the first agent and they transferred me to a second level agent, didn't have to ask, they went through the normal troubleshooting, asked me some questions about how I used it, etc. and then they set up the replacement. Two days later I had the replacement. I would suggest calling them at 800-275-2273 before I went off the deep end wringing my hands about what to do and running around looking for a replacement.
