How do I connect to verizon dsl through my dsl modem

I currently have a linsys wireless router connected to a westech modem (supplied by Verizon). I am trying to swap out my Linksys for the Airport Extreme.

I cannot seem to make it work. I have opened the Airport Utility and tried to configure but don't seem to have (or know) how I should configure the settings in the Utility.

I am in California so I we do NOT use PPPoE as a connection -- it's DHCP.

I would be very appreciative if you could explain to me how to swap out my Linkys.

Thanks -- I'll even send you a small paypal donation (not sure if that is against protocal of this discussion board so excuse me if that is not the case).

imac, Mac OS X (10.4.10)

The directions that came with your Extreme are pretty easy. Factory reset your Extreme. Take your Linksys out of the system. Connect your Extreme to the modem. Open Airport Utility and scan for wireless devices. Your Extreme should show up as it's factory ID. Just configure from there by following the on screen prompts. Remember do not call the new wireless system by the same name as the old system and do not use the same password as the old system.

Thanks. I got that far I think. The iMac was able to find the Airport Extreme but the error kept telling me that the iMac couldn't connect to the internet. The modem had all the necessary green lights set up. And the Airport Extreme seemed to be getting the signal from the modem. And the iMac seem to find the Airport Extreme.

Reading on other chat boards in the meantime, I am wondering if I have to do a DHCP release. I have a rather old DSL modem (not sure if that would make a difference or not). Would that make sense to try? It looks like there is that option in the Airport Utility application.

my saga continues. it sounds like i have to make verizon reset the the dhcp on their side. over and over again i have restarted my modem but the modem doesn't seem to renew the dhcp. the other weird thing is that i can access my dsl through the linksys router but cannot access dsl directly by plugging my modem into my imac or laptop pc running windows xp. any ideas are welcomed.

Thank you for helping me realize I am not losing my mind! I am having the same problem, California, Verizon, DSL, etc., etc. I just finished spending 12+ hours trying to figure this out. I have an airport but I am trying to switch it out with a new one (802.11n) and no matter how faithfully I follow every single setting on my working older airport, it simply will NOT connect.

I'm selling an totally brand new airport extreme on ebay shortly if anyone is interested!!!

If Verizon in your area doesn't require PPPoE than it must be using MAC address authorization meaning that it checks the MAC address of your router and if it doesn't match its record, it won't response to your DHCP request and you won't get a WAN IP. I am having the same problem here with Verizon FiOS. One way to solve it is to force one router to have the same MAC address as another router. It is called MAC address cloning but I have not been able to figure out how to do that in AirPort Utility. I am sure AirPort Extreme has this feature. Every other router I used before has it.

Before I figure out how to do Mac cloning, a temporary solution is to piggyback AirPort Extreme to your Linksys by connecting one of the three GBit port (not the WAN port) to a LAN port of the Linksys and turn off the radio of the Linksys. This way you can use 802.11n and all the features of the AirPort Extreme including USB disk and printer sharing. The only drawback is that the speed going out to the Internet is limited by the speed of the Linksys which is 100Mbps.

This is a great insight and it just makes me more angry at Verizon for making it all so **** difficult. That said, there is definitely a 'MAC' tab in the airport utitlity because I saw it not knowing what it meant. When I compared this on previous (working) airport, it was all blank, no digits/codes, etc. Is it possible this is still the cause? Is the "MAC" issue something on the Verizon side?
