Poor video quality or "ghosting" on homemade DVDs

Hi, first of all I apologize if I don't have all the technical answers for you regarding version numbers, etc. - I am typing this from home and the suspect computer is at work.

I have an eMac in my classroom where I teach and I recently had an external LG DVD burner installed, as well as VLC media player. After a little tinkering and learning from district techs, I can play commercial DVDs and they look great - the display is sent through an LCD projector onto a 77" screen.

However, I am having slight problems playing DVDs that I created at home on my PC using various movie-making software and burning using Sonic MyDVDPlus. The problem is not that the DVDs don't play - everything works perfectly - but when they are playing, the images have "shadows"...by this I mean moving objects have a sort of blur or ghost image behind them. This happens primarily with quickly moving figures.

I have been told it may be an issue with how the DVDs were created, but they play perfectly without ghosting (or whatever the term would be) on regular DVD players and televisions, and on my PC.

Are there any things I could try such as codecs to be downloaded in conjunction with VLC? I am more familiar with PCs, and my strategy would be to update the all the latest versions and install different codec packages, but I have no idea if this would do anything on a Mac with VLC. Another possible barrier is that I am unable to install anything myself, as it is a district computer that requires a tech admin to install things. If someone is familiar with this problem and knows that it can be solved with a simple install, I could certainly get a tech admin to do it for me.

If anyone knows how I could fix this homemade DVD problem for my Mac at school, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

Edit: After taking a closer look at some videos (I'm at school now) the problem seems to be less of ghosting as the presence of horizontal lines, particularly noticeable during scenes with fast motion. I assume this has something to do with interlacing, but how can I make it look better on a Mac when it plays fine in a standard DVD player and PC? Thanks again.

Make sure your Mac has all of the recent updates. There is a "check for updates" feature in the finder.

Not being familiar with PC DVD software, these are some tips that are used when creating a DVD on the Mac.
Burn at a slow speed like 1x or 2x
Can your program burn on a DVD-R (Macs tend to read these better than DVD+R)? If so use a high quality brand such as Maxcell or Verbatim.

If all else fails you should be able to connect a commercial DVD player to your projector.

hope this helps.
