file type: image/pjpeg--how do you open these?

I just recieved a photo as an email attachment. The file type is image/pjpeg. I can't open it. When I try to open it ColorSync Utility opens and give me the message that it cannot open files of this type. When I try to use Preview to open it, which works just fine for jpeg, the name of the file appears grey, indicating that it is essentially invisible to Preview. I've never seen this file type before and can't find an application to open it. Any suggestions?

Welcome to Apple Discussions!

An image/pjpeg is a progressive jpeg.
They're hardly ever used, because no one can open them.
And you need special software to convert it to a jpg.

You could try changing the extension of the file from .pjpeg
to .jpg -- See if it will open then. If if won't then just tell the
sender that they've sent a type file that can't be opened, and see
if they can't take a screenshot of the photo, rather than a pjpeg.
