MSN email setup

Anyone know the settings for a msn.com email account. MSN's website stinks and I don't want to waste any more time searching.

Thanks

MSN/Hotmail will not work on th iPhone becuase it is http based email. The iPhone will only handle POP3 and IMAP related email. I had to purchase izymail.com for a very small yearly fee which works flawlessly in transferrying my msn email account. It sets up well with Outlook 2003 and I have had no problems other then my own stupidity in setting it up under POP instead of IMAP. Also one of the security updates affected it briefly, but after rebuilding the account it actually works better and faster. Hope that helps.

Good Luck!

Unfortunately, I'm one of the msn email users. This thread is all way too complex for me, maybe I'm just too tired to focus. I think I will just follow one of the suggestions that said to create a gmail account (which I just did) and have my msn mail forwarded to gmail. Can someone please tell me where I do that? Do I go to gmail.com to have it forwarded? And where/how exactly? I am doing this on my desktop since I am not familiar enough with my iphone yet. Anyone who wants to dis me for not knowing any of this, go for it, you will be ignored. I'm just here to try to learn what to do, not to be flamed or argue or whatever.

You have no idea what an absolute life-saver you are. I have scoured the intertubes looking for this answer and you're the only one that has been able to solve this issue for me. I have to imagine others have had this issue as well, I'm surprised this hasn't come up more often. THANK YOU for taking the time to post. Now I'm just going to add a bunch of search terms that I used to try and find an answer to help others get to your post.

Outlook via MSN on an Iphone works just fine.

I have had an Iphone since last summer (over a year ago) and I have been using my msn outlook account with my iphone the entire time even though both apple and MSN and ATT told me it was impossible to do it. Initially it downloaded a couple of hundred emails so that is why I had called them.

I think perhaps that the reason mine has always worked is that I have always had outlook set up as a pop3 account on my laptop and my phone just copied over the settings. Since the 2.1 update however I can no longer send email and get the dreaded error message so I had to go back into the settings for the out-going server. Click on it "smtp.live.com" to open up the additional settings, make sure you have that selected for your primary server, then finally on the smtp.live.com screen I had to add my user name (Myemail@msn.com) as well as the password. Then back all the way back out.

Sometimes you also have to turn the account on and off to get the new settings to "activate" .

I have four different accounts on my phone. Gmail. MSN, two private domains and they all actually work

I have an MSN account though ATT (had since it was with qwest) and works on my iphone as long as I make sure that my name and password is entered into the outgoing server setup page.

I just set it up as a pop account using the same settings in this thread. One setting that I missed the first time was the advanced settings for the outgoing server ((you have to scroll down on the MSN Settings page to find it it is not under the red advanced button but found by clicking directly on the outgoing mail server)make sure that smtp.live.com is your primary server, click on that to the third screen and make sure that my email address and password is entered

I have had it working on my phone since July 2007 so I am not sure why people

I have a regular MSN premium account (versus hotmail) and I have always had it working on my Iphone (since summer of 07). It even blows in three of my outlook calendars (which I also have set up on my home computer using these same settings). http://support.microsoft.com/kb/930008 The only change from the hotmail configuration is that you need to change the default servers that apple uses for MSN to the "live" servers. (sometimes you need to go into the settings a second time to edit them)

STep 1) Select "Settings icon" on main Iphone screen
Step 2) Select "Mail, Contacts, Calendars" on menu
Step 3) Under Accounts select "Add Account"
Step 4) *DO NOT* Select Microsoft exchange unless you are setting up a work account
Select "Other"

Step 5) On the New Account Screen
Enter your actual name, Bob Jones
Enter your full email address BobJones@msn.com
Enter your Password (to your msn email account)
Enter a Description (just a generic name for the account like MSN or accept the default with is your email address)

Step 6 It takes you to a screen that warns you that you need to have a MSN premium subscription - select next (top right blue button)and will attempt to connect to the pop3.email.msn.com server Then you will get a popup error message "Cannot connect using SSL do you want to try setting up the account without SSL?) yes or no Select NO..

Step 7 Finally you get to the actual account screen that you need to edit. YEAH

POP

Name: John Smith (note: enter your own name)
Address: example@msn.com (note: enter your full MSN email address this time)
Description: MSN

Incoming Mail Server:
Host Name: pop3.live.com (this is critical.. change to live vs email.msn)
User Name: example@hotmail.com (note: enter your full MSN email address)
Password: password (note: enter your MSN password)

Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP):
Host Name: smtp.live.com
User Name: example@msn.com (note: enter your full MSN email address)
Password: password (note: enter your MSN password)

Step 10: Save (you have to save in order to see the advance settings) but it sometimes goes out for a very long time even on a wireless connection and tries to verify your pop account again will give you an error that it cannot send mail. HIT OK (if you want to avoid the error screens just enter a fake server in the earlier step.. ie xxx@tst.com and manually enter all the data to get to the advance screen)

Step 8
You should be on the Mail, contacts, calendar and select "accounts" go to your msn account
Scroll way down to the bottom. red button appears with advance options
Advanced Settings:
Incoming Uses SSL: On
Outgoing Uses SSL: On
Authentication: Password
Delete from Server: When removed from Inbox (or your preferred option)
Server Port should be 995

Tada.. up and running including your calendar and contacts
