Unable to update ~/Library/Keychains - something else went wrong

Hi users. The message in the subject line is what I get when I try to "verify" or "repair" in Keychain Access. I have been trying to resolve the Safari keychain login issue from posts that I've read in the forums.

Can anyone help?

Hi Todd!

Does your keychain currently work for you? Are you able to at least access its stored passwords?

If not and you haven't been able to use it for a while then I suggest trashing the login.keychain file from ~/Library/Keychains where " ~ " is your home folder. Log out or restart and a new one will be created for you. This will delete all your saved passwords and any certificates you may have stored but all of these can usually be recovered from their original sources.

Hope this helps!

Hi Bill. Thanks for your contribution here.
When I access the keychain access I see a lock for "System" and a lock for "X509Anchors". Then under "Category" I see Passwords" in which "AppleShare", "Application" and "Internet" exist. However, I don't see any passwords next to them listed.

I am able to unlock the System Keychain if that's what you mean. I'm sorry I'm very basic in this area.

I didn't really understand when you said trash it so I haven't done it yet.

I can't find my Keychain Access app.I had it until I used the repair keaychain. Since then all **** broke loose. I get errors upon errors & I haven't a clue as how to address them. But that keychain access is missing from my utilities folder. I've searched everywhere including my external drive. It is nowhere. How do I restore it? Please help. Everythng is sch a mess. Thanks.

Start your own topic, don't threadjack.

From the terms of use:

*Threadjack—To wrongly post a dissimilar issue in an existing discussion, distracting from the true focus of the discussion. If your issue has any significant difference from a similar topic, then you're probably better off posting a new topic to focus attention on your particular issue.*

I'm sorry. This whole keychain biz has always been confusing to me. I've been studying the "Help Viewer" to understand it better and I get more confused.

I do not see where to find options to delete the login.keychain or create another one. I'm sure I'm completely overlooking it but I'm afraid to do something that I'm not sure of.

Okay, when I click "Show Keychain" it reveals System and X-something anchor. Which one do I delete?

Launch Keychain Access, select a keychain in the left-hand column, unlock it, and under the File menu item see Delete Keychain <name of keychain>. E.g., login if that's what you selected. Under the File menu is a *New Keychain* option. However, before doing anything, ensure that you backup your current keychains so you can get back to your current state. A bootable backup/clone of your boot volume is ideal.

Somewhere, someplace, there has to be a login.keychain or something renamed. With only two keychain choices, I have no idea what's amiss with your setup. The default login.keychain is located in /Users/username/Library/Keychains/. If it's not there, you'll have to find it. Review Keychain Access's help files for deleting/creating keychains.

Hi Todd!

My instructions aren't intending for you to use the Keychain Access utility. I'm simply telling you to delete a file from your Mac and where to find it.

Deleting this file will force your Mac to create a new file. Any passwords that you had stored will be erased but that shouldn't be an issue if you're already unable to use your keychain.

Hope this helps!
