itunes + iPod classic freezes

When I connect my 80Gig iPod classic to my windows XP machine and play music through the PC's speakers using itunes, every time a song reaches 9 seconds iTunes freezes for 26 seconds - the music still plays but the iTunes window is frozen with no responses to mouse clicks. After the 26 seconds all the mouse clicks happen quickly as if they were queued up and the ellapsed song time skips to 35seconds and then continues on normally. During this 26 second freeze iTunes takes up 50% of the CPU in the Windows task manager Process screen. (The 50% is actually 100% of one of the 2 cores of the dual core CPU)

The freeze also happens sometimes randomly later in songs.

Plugging in the iPod takes about 1min for itunes to start up and it takes about 2 minutes to eject the iPod which seems long, my nano is significantly quicker at this, and exibits no iTunes freezes. This freezing happens on 2 different PC's that I've tried. Anyone seen similar behavior?

I'm using itunes 7.4.1.2

hp, Windows XP

I truly understand!! I'm just has frustrated as all that can related to this problem. I was getting ready go the apple store to sort this problem, but after reading these postings I changed my mind doing so. I have both 160GB Classic and 80GB (5.5 Generation) and the 80 runs faster than the 160GB. I thought is was because of the space, but it makes my computer slow. Very slow, sometimes I do not even see the converting bar on my computer. Yes, I have not only seen this I felt it. I get so tight with it all. I can't even scroll on my itunes while it is syncing. How is that possible. I'm a FAN with apple products, but this something they have to fix and corrected. So I'll be waiting as all of you should be!! Good Luck to my Ipod Carriers!!

Yours Truly,

Mac Bandit!!

Hi, just adding my experiance.

I bought the 160gb classic to replace my 60gb 5g video.I came home from holiday with it and plugged it into my computer to sync my existing library ,then the problems started.
Firstly i was asked to upgrade the software for both Itunes and the ipod (this worked fine). The ipod started to sync then stopped giving me an error -50 message. After alot of trial and error i found if i didnt check the sync photos box then this error would not happen,GREAT,not quite!! I started getting pop ups telling me the following-

1. Windows wrong volume - the wrong volume is in the drive. Please insert volume garysipod into drive T:\ (i changed the drive letter to T after reading this could fix things?? NOT!)

2. When trying a restore i sometimes got - The ipod could not be restored an unknown error occurred (1418)??

3. Windows was unable to save all the data for the file T:\ipod controlartworkF10611.ithmb the data has been lost. This error may be caused by failier of your computer hardware or network connection please try to save this file elsewhere???

These problems would occur when itunes was upto syncing between 800 - 1100 songs and itunes would freeze.I would try to eject the ipod but nothing would happen.I had to use Task Manager to close itunes and manually eject the ipod. After turning on the ipod i found that it would only have about 12 songs on it????

I basically have a useless ipod brick!!

I phoned apple service and the guy said he had never heard of my problems and asked if i had restored (yes about 12 times!!!).He told me the best he could do would be to have it collected to be looked at / replaced. They are coming to collect tomorrow but after reading this site i feel a replacment is going to do exactly the same!!

I had sold my 60gb video to a aunty who loaned it back to me last night. It was empty so i pluged it in to sync and guess what - 54gb of music/video/photos synced without problem in about 1.45 hours.

APPLE YOU NEED TO SORT THIS URGENTLY OR YOUR GOING TO GET THESE BACK BY THE TRUCK LOAD.

Please feel free to comment on the problems i have had (HOPEFULLY A APPLE REPRESENTITIVE) noooooooooooootttt.

icemannsam, the only way i could get it out of the cycle was to start it in disk mode. Apple has a document thingy about this, have a look here and give it a go - http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651. it forces it to mount in iTunes, and has allowed me to try restoring it a few times, but unfortunately that didnt work. its worth a shot though before sending it back!
