my new iMac just died

I have a 2.4Ghz, 20" Intel iMac... screen went black and it won't turn back on. No sounds, no lights, no nothing. It may have died while trying to wake up from sleep mode, but since the screen was already black in sleep mode, I can't be sure... I think I heard the fan start to turn on and then stop, but I wasn't paying very close attention until I realized nothing was happening. Tried plugging in to different outlets... no luck. There was no storm or power surge in my house (but it was in a surge protector anyway). Anyone have this problem? Is this a known firmware issue, or a known hardware issue? I have an appointment to take it in to an Apple store. If they have to replace it, I hope they can retrieve the files on the hard drive. Just posting this to let others know that it happened, and in case anyone has any insight. I'll follow up after I visit with the "Geniuses".

Thanks!

I bought my new aluminum iMac just few days after its release in Apple stores. Just 3 days later my screen started to flicker... 3 minutes intensive flickering it was obvious that something inside is dying, either screen, or power supply or something third...

I went back to Apple store, people at Genius bar were unbelievable polite. As soon as they plugged it in, some strange sounding sound came out of the case... not that standard Apple chime that we always hear, but some metalic rhoar or something. The girl (Mac Genius) who was helping me, said: "I don't even have to look any further... this is more than enough to replace this unit..."

And she gave me a brand new box. Went home, and (knock on wood) few months after everything works perfectly. Not a single issue with this new one I've got. Oh, I have to say, not a single freezing or shutting down and believe me I tried every single application I have installed like million of times. Most demanding GFX application, 3D modeling tools etc. used to make my old one froze. Everything works perfectly with this new one. I am so happy. I just hope it will stay like this... 2 months and counting...

Oh yes, I forgot to say that the first one, broken one I've got had three annoying dead pixels around the middle of the screen. The Genius girl told me that is also another sign that something is really wrong and even manufacturing standards sometimes allow certain number of dead pixels as acceptable, this is not how it supposed to be. Apple prices are still pretty high and if we spend all this money on something that's suppose to be at least close to perfect, we expect at least not to have such a major problems.

Again, I have to say people at Genius bar were unbelievable polite, they also explained how everything works and why this is like this and why that is like that... This World would be a lot better place to live in if we just have more people and customer service representatives behaving like this. A way to go Sherway Gardens, Toronto Apple store !

I'm back... ok, now my built in camera isn't working... I start up Photo Booth and get a green screen... I get the green light that shows the camera is on, but my ugly mug doesn't show up. I take a picture and get a green square. Tried installing 3rd party iGlasses, that didn't do anything. Tried rebooting PRAM, nothing. Tried restarting SMC, nothing. Tried repairing disk permissions, but nothing effected my camera. This worked before I took it in to get the power supply repaired. Is it possible that they disconnected the camera when they opened it up?

This happened to me too, (except the green light didn't go on). This was on my brand new machine. Check in system profiler under USB and see if built-in-isight shows up. If it doesn't, its a hardware issue. When this happened to me, I sent my computer in (because it is a custom machine) and got a whole new one.

I'm just going through the same thing with my Core Duo early 2006 too. Random turn off's started on saturday, i called the Apple local authorized retailer and they suggested power supply, but having experienced power supply issues in the past twice [with a g3 indigo imac working on relatively high heat and with quite loaded applications and tasks], bringing up UPS issues after a year and six months of basically NO USE [this is not my main computer, we impulse bought it when it came out but i'm still loyal to the G5 that is faster and works better, period] after my issues before took 4 years to develop seemed ridiculous. So thread-searching i found several things to try and rule out internal problems, and while i was trying the first one [or to be more precise, after finishing up the first one] which was running the disk repair utility [that also came out with a crazy amount of 'errors' and 'mismatches', that it allegedly fixed], i went to quit the utility and the computer died. I'm guessing this is not one of the random turn offs because usually when it turned off before after around 15 minutes of 'cool off' it would turn back on, but now it's completely unresponsive. I tried restarting the SMC with no luck [or actually, not the slightest effect whatsoever].

I have no idea what to do, and the fact that the silly power supply replacement might not even work is a very scary thought. I'm ready to take the computer down to the repair center, but i'd at least love to turn her on before i do [i know, still wishful thinking, but UPS its such a ridiculous thought!]
