keyboard problem MacBook Pro

For the past few weeks, my macbook pro has been having problems with it's keyboard. For some time while I was using a wireless keyboard and wireless mouse, the keyboard on the computer itself was not working. Now I have stopped using the wireless keyboard and mouse, and sometimes my keyboard won't work at all either. Tonight it stopped working for 5 minutes, and then finally started to work again. This seems to be an intermittent problem, so when I go to the genius bar at the apple store, the problem does not occur so that they can see what is happening.

Any ideas out there on why I might be having this intermittent problem? The trackpad seemed to function, just none of the keys work for a period of time.

Thanks for any advice.

(and by the way, i posted this question initially on the wrong discussion for the macbook and didn't know how to delete it from that discussion)

Great post Wartooth - thanks for summing all this up.

Just over three weeks for me: bought my MBP on Leopard Day + 1. No problems whatsoever until today, when the keyboard randomly slept on me a few times.

My setup sounds very similar to yours so I'll keep an eye on the trackpad. I generally use a bluetooth Mighty Mouse, so perhaps that's why I didn't see the problem before. I don't however use external USB mouse or keyboard, so can't test that theory.

Will live with the issue for a couple of weeks and see what develops. I want to avoid the Apple Store trip if I can.

I also have the keyboard issues with Leopard, issues that never appeared in Tiger.

The strange thing is, I can narrow it down to quite a specific action. It seems that they keyboard freezing issue with me occurs 5 to 10min after wake from standby or deep sleep. if it doesn't happen then, it just doesn't happen at all and I can work just fine but who knows, the next wake from standby or deep sleep might trigger it again...

The only external input device I have ever used with my MacBook Pro is the wireless remote that came with it. The only USB devices I have ever plugged in are storage devices. I've been having the keyboard problem since 10.5.1 came out. At first, I thought it was a problem with Firefox. It updated around that time too. I have found nothing in the log files that seem to relate to the problem.

Holding a key for about 10 seconds seems to fix the problem temporarily, but that is not a good solution. It also requires no trackpad input for the whole 10 seconds. Logging out seems to fix it temporarily too. Again, this is no solution.

What do you mean you don't know what to do? Call Apple! Complain! Make them send you a new MBP.

Use your warrenty!!!

done. called apple. they said send it in.
thing is, i can’t afford to be without my machine even a minute since i have dozens of projects i’m working on …

plus i’m pretty sure that it’s software related.

May not be so much a software problem, cuz i re-installed tiger and it still persisted. Jus got mine back from the apple store, they replaced the topcase and the keyboard. So far i can confirm that its working fine, and all the definite 'triggers' are no longer 'triggering'; but then again i've only had it back a few hours! Will update if any new developments come to the fore.

Same here but in my case they replaced the top case and the main logic board. Strange.

Don't know if this is relevant to this forum but I found this note on macbidouille http://www.hardmac.com/news/2007-11-16/ which states the following : +Apple has identified a bug registered as ID #5365684, and dealing with issues encountered by MacBook Pro owners: keyboard goes randomly in sleep mode, or the first pressed key is systematically ignored (not easy to write a text...). Cupertino is currently working on a fix.+
+Some readers have reported similar issues with other hardware models, such as MacBook or iMac Alu.+

Do you have access to an external firewire hard drive? I have installed Leopard (clean install) on an external drive and copied all my settings, applications etc. to it. Here is a link on how to install Leopard on a firewire drive:

http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20071025100548752

I am booting to this drive while I wait for the replacement MBP which is coming from Apple. One has to deactivate Adobe products and deauthorized iTunes then activate and authorize when booted from the external drive. I have access to another Mac. An external hard drive might give you the following options:

1. If software related, the issue might disappear when booted from the external drive. Once satisfied all is well with the external drive and the functioning of your software, you could do a clean install on your internal drive and copy all settings & applications back to it. I find it is better to go the "clean install route" rather than try to clone a Leopard hard drive. I have had mixed success with cloning since Leopard came out.

2. If you have access to another Mac, you can boot to this external drive and continue your work while you wait for yours to be repaired. The external drive will at least function as a backup of all your work and applications before sending your computer off. It can then serve as your Time Machine when your computer is returned.

Update: 10.5.1 didn't help. My keyboard is freezing up about every two min. now. Will reboot soon; have been trying to get any clues about the cause (if there are any software clues). My trackpad works, just the keyboard freezing.

Please, only one person answer, but is there anyone with this problem NOT using Virex? I'm having all these console messages every 10 seconds: com.apple.launchd[1] (com.mcafee.virusscan.VShieldEPOInterface) Throttling respawn: Will start in 10 seconds. Probably unrelated.

According to coconutIdentityCard 2.2, my Mac was built in Shanghai, China, between 10.09.2007 and 16.09.2007.

p.s. I Googled:

... and I get 10 pages of results. Not all about this problem necessarily, but many are.
